Farmall A clutch question

Hi Guys,

On the 1939 Farmall A I just got I've noticed that when you start the tractor (in Neutral of course) and push in the clutch it doesn't completely disconnect the trans from the engine. When I move the shifter it will grind for a few seconds until everything stops. Is this normal with these old machines. It's been raining for the past week so I haven't been out to try the old double clutch trick. Once you're underway you can shift no problem, it's seems to be just when you start her up. Any ideas?

thanks,
bob

A while back somebody mentioned a trick on these old transmissions. I have a '50 C with the standard 4 forward plus reverse. With the clutch pushed in I take the gear shift lever over to the same side as reverse. I push forward on it and it helps to stop the gears faster. Just an oh-by-the-way. I have never driven an A before so not sure if it has the same tranny as the C.

Bob: I have to agree with the others, the automatic transmission and clutch brakes have made us an impatient society.

Try holding your clutch down for a few seconds before shifting. Having the engine at idle helps. Also your transmission fluid probibly has water in it. You should drain it and refill with 80W/90. And yes, They all do this to some degree. Dave.

It's normal. It's better to have on low idle when shifting from a dead stop
