Just had the mag rebuilt A year ago on my F-12.It started & ran good for total of less than four hours.(only start it once in A while for show)It started to get harder and harder to start and now it won`t start at all.I think it might be the condenser, but what would cause it to go bad in A years time.No spark at all. Thanks for any help,Shank.

How's your carbon rods - if something has happened to the one to the cap then you won't get any spark. Also does the rotor have a lot of carbon on it, I've read that can short out the spark.

Make sure you have the advance/retard lever (on points cover) turned down (clockwise). Raising it up fully should shut off the spark.

As others have noted, points are usually the problem. Could also be bad contact between points cup and magneto frame. Is impulse clicking? If you have an ohmmeter, you can check out all the electrical parts pretty easily.

I put together a CD on F-4 restoration a year or so ago. Let me know if you'd like a (free) copy.

Use an OHM meter to ck points, visual doesn't always show the problems. Sand paper will leave grit that insulates the points, use a point file. For more information see "How to restore tractor magnetos" by Neil Yerigan. Covers E4A, F4 and H4 plus others.

Check your points for corrosion and for moisture in your cap also check you spark plugs and make sure there not fouled

Jeff,The points are new,new wires, new plugs, new coil.Points are properly set & the timing is right on the money.Like I said earlier,it started and ran great for A while, and than slowly went the other way,Shank.

Before you tear into the Mag, listen to Jeff. The F12 points seems to regularly get a film over them that doesn't allow good contact. Take some very fine sandpaper or even just regular heavy paper like a piece of index card and rub it between the two points a few times (when they are closed). Then see if you have spark again. No guarantees that this easy fix will work for you but it has been an issue on my F12 often.

If the points, condensor, and coil check out, the next possibilities are to check the breaker point carrier, and see if it is somehow being grounded out, and checking the charge on the magnet.
