What type of oil is used for f-20? Non-detergent or oil with detergent?

I standardized on 10w30 oil for my truck, car, both tractors, mower, tiller. Dont think straight weight is better. Multiviscosity is better (thin) when cold for startup, and still has the thicker viscosity when hot. They would have put in in all tractors if it was available back then. Detergent is good for a motor. LIke the guys said, if never used before it will start cleaning the insides and you need to change the oil a couple times to see if anything is washed dwon into the pan. Run 50 hours and drain and "look" then determine next interval.

just run whatever you have. i use IH #1 30 weight in mine. It is the same heavy duty oil that I run in my diesels.

If the engine has been overhauled and all the crud in the oil pan has been cleaned out and the oil pump screen has been thoroughly cleaned, then there is no reason not to use detergent oil. After all, detergent oil keeps your engine much cleaner than non-detergent because all particles remain in suspension. As far as multigrade, it's a crap shoot. In 95+ degree weather, I run 20W-50 in my F20. In winter I run straight 30. I don't think it makes much difference as long as your engine is getting good lubrication and your oil pressure stays up. There are 50 million points of view on this, but this is what I do and have never had a problem.

Unless it's last owner was already running it on detergent oil, I would use straight 30 weight non detergent oil. If the previous owner has been using detergent oil for quite some time I would go with straight 30 weight detergent oil. You will probably get recommendations for both. I would definitely NOT go with a multi grade.

The reason I suggest not using multi grade is: a multi grade oil is actually the oil thickness of the lower numbers with enhansers added which make it act with the properties of the higher rating. 10w40 is actually 10w with enhansers that give it the property of 40w for example. In some tests it is shown that in hot conditions you don't actually get the same protection you would with a heavier straight weight oil. In cold weather or when running only under light loading the multi grade is probably the best, but for heavy loading in hot summertime I would still recommend a single grade 30 weight.
