Was trying to mow hay yeaterday with a Farmall 200. Suddenly noticed a knocking sound that concerned me greatly. Limped back to the shop. Pulled the valve cover, everything appeared OK. Pulled the oil pan, everything appeared OK, then I found what looked like a gear tooth, at the front of the pan. Removed the governor to find the top timing gear which drives the governor and distributor was damaged, and missing 4 teeth. The large gear below which runs the cam had damage to three teeth on two different sides. What happened? Why the sudden failure? Anyone got a source of these gears, without spending an arm and a leg?

C/SUPERC/200/230 were all same engine basically, drive gears will fail after many years, when they first designed these engines no hyd pump was mounted. They lasted quite a while after they put on pumps so IH wasnt really aware of these failures till way later. If it lasts 40 years or more that really isnt bad.

Ray, I have been working on my 49 Super A these last few weeks and I have noticed that the cam drive gear is well worn. At some point in time those teeth will just let go and break off with bad results. I would replace the gear and drop the pan and clean it out. Hopefully that should do it.

I had that happen on a C. The nut that holds the gear on the hydraulic pump came off and completely deatroyed the cam gear.

The gears are available. I have a NOS cam gear, and I can send you to a place that will supply a complete governor carrier for cheaper than anyone.

Justin, It is nice to see that you, Kim, and some of the others are reading this board. I'm sure that you grimace every time I say to go to your local Case/IH dealer. I have been around long enough that I have figured out that "cheaper" is not alway the "best". In my younger days I made numerous trips back to the store to get a replacement for a replacement that should have worked. My closest Case/IH dealer is about 30 miles away. They have always been able to get the parts that I need and they have always fit. I have the parts manual for my tractor and it is easy to give them the IH part number and they take it from there. There are plenty of people in this world that will drive 10-20 miles just to save a dollar or to shop to try to save that dollar. Just my $0.02 worth. Like I said, it is nice seeing you "guys" responding once in awhile. Randy

I am probably the most vocal about using original IH Parts, and will only use a repo when it is the only thing available. I do have NOS carrier assys, but they are with a complete governor assy package for the 140, which means the housing and other parts wont work on anything but the 140..

Salvage yard is the place to look for the gears. I'll check my Farmall 200, 230, 240 parts book tomorrow and let you know if they all use the same gears. Was there any damage to the hydraulic pump drive gear? Were any of the gears loose? It kind of sounds like somthing got between those two gears.

K.B. > Can't find anything that got in between the gears. Assume the damage to the distributor/governor gear caused the damage to the cam gear. No evidence of damage to hydraulic pump gear, but will take it off today and look closer. Am considering trying to repair the damaged teeth - welding and grinding/filing back to shape. Please check your book about cross fitting of other tractor engines. Believe that engine was used on a number of models in that era.

Justin,> Please drop me an email at the above address. What may be harder to find than the gear, is the little ball bearings & race in the shaft that sticks into the governor off that gear!

Checked the book. 200, 230, and 240 all used the same gears. That's a good indication that all C-123's used the same gears.
