I have an old Farmall 100 series tractor that will not start. I have a brand new battery and one-gauge cables bought this morning. The starter was checked out and works perfectly. It is a push button starter. All it does when pushed is click. I really need to get this tractor running.

In addition to the other comments, you need to make sure the engine will turn over. If it is stuck for whatever reason (such as cylinder full of water, etc.) the starter will indeed click but not turn over.

Not a permanent fix but..... if you really need the tractor, pull start it. Then when you have the time get someone to check it out. In addition, if your battery was dead it will charge when running.

Your new battery may not be fully charged, put a charger on it, and try again tomorrow.

You might pull the starter off and make sure that it isn't caught on the ring gear. Make sure that the ground cable is making a good, clean, secure ground. By push button starter are you talking about a converted 12v system. If so you can short across the start button to see if the button is good. If you have the original button located on the side of the starter those only cost about $15.00 and are easy to replace. Just a couple of things to check.

Randy,

I am not a mechanic so don't know much of what you are talking about. The starter button is clean. A guy working on my other tractor checked the starter and button. Both were in perfect condition. I am not sure what you mean by ring gear and if it has been converted. It has a 6-volt battery.

The fellow talking about a "ring gear" is referring to the gear around the flywheel. If you take your starter off the tractor and look in the hole where it came out you will see the ring gear. The gear on the end of your starter engages this. You can bypass your wiring by taking a screwdriver and shorting across the terminal on your starter that the battery cable hooks to and one of the other terminals. If your starter turns the motor over, then its your switch/wiring and/or ground cable thats either bad or not making a connection do to dirt, paint, corrosion, etc. Make sure you tractor is out of gear when you try this.

I apologize but I don't get what you mean by shorting across the terminal on the starter. Is the battery cable removed? What other terminal are you talking about? The ground wire? As you can tell I am pretty inept when it comes to mechanics.

Thanks

You need to keep all cables hooked up. You may want to disconnect the ground cable where it fastens to the frame of the tractor. Take a wire brush and clean both the end of the cable and the area where it fastens to the frame. Have to have good contact. Shorting across the switch just means that you are jumpering across the two connection posts on the switch. This just makes sure that the switch isn't your problem.
