H misses at high RPMs

I'm 20 and just getting into the old tractors. I'm lovin' it, but I need a little advice. My '49 H runs great at all speeds except when the throttle is wide open. It seems to miss fire at the top RPMs. I've tried adjusting all I could think of, the carb, gov., throttle, distr., spark, yet I can't seem to fix the problem. Is that the way the old H's ran or is there something not quite right?

Had the same problem, it was moisture in the gas

Does this happen only under high RPM? Or does it happen when the tractor is under load too? If it also does this when the tractor is under load, I would look at the fuel system.

It doesn't seem to do it under load, I mostly notice it when I've got the throttle pulled full open in neutral or once I've reached top speed in any gear when I'm just traveling around the barn lot.

Point bounce can also cause missing at high rpm. You might want to check that the proper points are installed and the spring tension is correct. Have fun.

Those old Hs are one of the smoothest running tractors ever built, you are going to have to dig a little deeper than just making adjustments, check the distributor for excess wear, also make sure that the mechanical advance is working. Next would be to check and adjust the valve clearance, also check for vacuum leaks at the manifold gaskets, carb. to manifold gasket, it's also possible that the ignition coil is weak.
Have I confused you? If you haven't already done so, get the set of manuals, and just take things one step at a time, these old Farmalls are pretty simple. Have fun!
