I need help with a problem. I have a Super C that has been sitting for @2 years waiting for me to replace the head gasket which I finally did a couple of weeks ago. Charged up the battery and ole bessie fired right up. However, when I pushed in the clutch pedal to put it into 1st gear it sounded like I had forgot to step on the clutch pedal. I have never had a problem with the clutch or getting it into gear which is why I am stumped. Anyone out there have any idea why this is happening and what I can do? Thanks

Ken

I have a 200 that used to do that often. The first gear and wham method sometimes worked, but it turned out that a bolt inside was backing out and causing the clutch throw out to not throw out enough. I thought for sure I was going to break something though with the slam/bam method. Good luck.

Wow, thanks to all you kind folks for giving me some advise on how to solve this problem. Two guesses on what I will be doing this weekend. I'll post a follow-up and let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Ken, I had the same stuck clutch problem with my C last week and it was an easy fix. With the switch off and the tractor in reverse gear on a hard surface, attach a tow strap from the drawbar to a hitch on a truck or to another tractor.
pull it with the truck. pump the clutch in and out and it will break loose. After that, start the tractor up and try to pull the truck with it, slipping the C clutch some to scrape that rust right off.

I just replaced a clutch on an 8N that was stuck. It was rusted on as Josh said. After spitting the tractor I thought I could have fixed it without splitting her. I tried all the draggin' around and driving with the clutch in stuff. Nothin' worked on mine, it was stuck good. I think if you can pull the starter and have access to a small part of the disk you could pry it apart slowly with a screw driver or blade. You may be able to gain access through the inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing, if your tractor has that. Have the clutch tied down all the way. If you can see the disk between the pressure plate and fly wheel you should be able to pry and turn the flywheel. Pry again. slowly work your way around the flywheel. I don't know what the pressure plate on your tractor looks like but I would think you could do this. On mine the disk was stuck to the flywheel. The pressure plate was free. Also if you adjust your clutch so there is NO play you will get a little more space to pry, Then if you free it re-adjust the clutch to the normal play.

It sometimes can be done buy running it around and holding in the clutch and hitting the brakes, but the best way is loosen the pressure plate bolts and back off the plate and take a punch or screwdriver and brake it loose and ya don't even have to split the tractor it can be done from under neath.

You have a stuck clutch. We solved this on an old oliver by putting the tractor in gear and lashing the clutch pedal down. Close the gas valve or take off the plug wires so it won't run. Drag it around until it breaks loose. Mine broke loose pulling it off the trailer(the motor was rusted tight as was the shifter).

If the clutch isn't stuck, it also could be that old style of throwout bearing with the graphite. They were junk and have a tendency to freeze up and wallow out the pilot bushing in short order. Either one, it looks like you have a splitting job on your hands.

This is a somewhat common problem on tractors that have been sitting for a while. The clutch plate has become rusted to the flywheel. Many times they aren't hard to break loose. In an OPEN area start it in first gear and drive it around holding the clutch pedal in. Hitting the brakes hard, and changing the engine speed a lot will help. The trick is to put as much stress as possible on it in the hopes of breaking it loose. I have done two this way, and both clutches are still in the tractor and work well now that they have been unstuck.
