Farmall A head gasket replacement

I'm still learning about tractors and how to work on them. My head gasket leaks oil so I tried tightening the head nuts but still have the seepage.
I assume the fix is to replace the gasket. I would appreciate any suggestions or things to watch for while doing this. Seems pretty staight forward but I haven't done this before.
Also, I put on a angle PTO for a belly mower.
Does anyone know how much gear oil to add to the PTO. Theres a fill plug on the top of the PTO, but I can't find any where in the owners manual
how much fluid to add..... Thanks, Mike

The PTO receives lub from the transmission and overflows back to the transmission. If you replaced something and the PTO is empty, add a pint or so through the fill port in the PTO.

Besure to measure the diameter of your pistons. I just recently replaced the head gasket on my '50 C. It has 3 1/8 in pistons in it instead of the orginal 3". I had trouble finding the correct head gasket. The 3 1/8" head gasket assumed that you were working with a Super A/B/C and that you had a water pump. The holes for the water ports are much smaller. Ended up drilling out the holes on the gasket so that they matched more closely the holes in the head/block. The head bolts are torqued to 80 ft-lbs. The manifold to 20 ft-lbs. The valves are set to 0.014 in. After you get it running again you need to warm it up and then re-torque the head bolts. This requires you to remove the valve rocker arm and re-set the valves. While you have it apart clean all of the carbon build up off the head and the top of the pistons. It would be a good time to check for valve wear. I was able to push on the valve stem and give it a quick visual. Not the most scientific but at least I didn't see anything of significance. You would also want to take a good straight edge and check the top of the block and the head to see if they are warped. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. There was a post yesterday that suggested using brake parts cleaner to wipe the surfaces of the head and block. Some kind of gasket sealant will help to keep you from doing this again. Some use the spray on kind. I used a high temp silcone sealant. Which ever you feel more comfortable with. I am sure that I have missed a couple of things but this gives you some things to look for. There was also a post yesterday about oil flow to the rocker arms and not using a locker washer on the center bolt. That would be worth reviewing. Good luck.

Go to IH/Case for the head gasket, many of the aftermarket are not recommended by people on this board. When you do replace it, make sure the two surfaces are clean, and spray some metalic paint on the head gasket. This paint will help seal the gasket better. After you install it, replace the head gasket, torque the bolts to 5 lbs below the recommend, stating from the inside out. Then go back and torque to the correct amount.

You should be able to find the capacity for the transmission in the archieves, I can't remember what exactly it is. I do know there are two drain plugs, one on the bottom or side of the transmission, and a second on the bottom of the PTO if you have it. Also make sure you give the indside a good cleaning buy taking the gear shifter off. Mine was full of crap.
