I have a 656 gas i am trying to install new points with no luck. i havent been able to get an owners manual yet. working on distributers is my weak point on tractors. What do the points have to be gapped at? what do u have to do to get the distributer just right to check the gap.. i bought a set of points at tractor supply for an IH distributer. 656 was NOT listed on box but it was the closest they had and i thought it might work. everything looks the same except for the small adjusting bracket with the contact point on it is different. i put the old one back in but still can't get the bugger to fire... any help would be appreciated...

I would suggest getting a electronic ignition kit and not worrying about points. I have used them and they are trouble free and you can install them..

yes there are 2 styles of points, you got the wrong ones. I take the distributer off the tractor so I can see what I'm doing. Just notice which way the rotor is pointing and don't crank the motor while it is off. Remember paper matches? the match book cover is about right for a gap.
