Confused and curious

I just bought a 1940 Farmall "A", which should keep me busy for another winter, but the serial number on the engine block indicates that it came out of a 1948 model. What is confusing is that it has the half moon cutout on the right front of the casting which would indicate that it may have been in a "B" or "BN" which to my knowlege ceased production in 1947. I don't remember that cutout being on the "A". Was it there all along on all models and I missed it? Not that it really matters, I'm just curious. Also, on the right hand side of the head, there are 2 sets of vertical tapped holes 1/4, or 3/16 between #1 and #2 spark plugs, and behind #4. What were these for? If restoring this is anything like the adventure getting it home from western Tenn. to Mich., then its going to be very interesting to say the least.

The holes in the block are for the aux petrol tank for those tractors that started on petrol and then switched to kero. Does the bonnet have an extra hole in it to fill. The little tanks are hard to find and i only have them in for show and block of the fuel flow. Check out some of the other casting numbers on other significant parts they are month-date-year. the trick is the year is a letter (and i dont have the details with me). Post some of the number back and ssomeone will have the details to confirm. You might just have another block on and older frame. (No one will know!!)

I thought that perhaps those holes were for the mounting bracket of the small gas tank. Yes, my hood has the extra hole, so I figure it was a kerosene model to begin with since the serial number has no suffix. I would like to find a tank if one exists out there somewhere. Maybe someone here knows where to find one.
