I recently acquired a B farmall, serial # FAB 218329, motor # M219547G. Cast into the block about in the middle, just below the magnito is the letters SAMPLE, in 1" letters. Also cast in the block under the firing order is the # 930. The pistons are 3 1/8" not 3" and they're doomed not flat. The tractor was painted red except for the hood which was originally yellow, and the fan guard was originally gold. It has no waterpump. Does anyone have an idea of what this is?

IHC built a lot of tractors that were sold to state highway departments to mow highway rights-of-way...including A's and B's. A lot of those, including ones used in Indiana and Kentucky, were painted Federal Yellow. Your tractor probably has had a hood replaced with one from one of these tractors.

At some point in time, I.H. used a blend of pigments in the red paint, which caused that paint to turn yellow as it faded. This might be what you have.

How can you be sure these are original colors? Perhaps they were painted this color in the late 1950's, and faded the last 45 years. Rebuilds to 123 cu in. with 3 1/8 pistons and sleeves were quite common.
