Are there different factory power steering units for a 460 utility? Someone has told me IH made a cylinder assiting type that mounted on tie rod and axle?? I known the steering box is a weak part of the 460. Thanks

Steering systems can get kind of confusing on those vintage IH. But I will tell you what I am know. [or what I think I know] There was a tie rod cyl. used on some of the 560 and 660, but I don't think it was ever used on the 460.
The 460U did use a hydraulic assist power steering unit. The way it works is a hyd. cyl was built into the steering box using a rack and gear to reduce the amount of effort used to turn the wheel. Otherwise its essentially the same as the manual steering. I don't know of any way to retrofit the manual steering with power steering on those models short of finding one in salvage yard. The farmall models did use a true power steering unit with a steering colunm pump and cylinders. I don't know if anyone has ever found a way to use the farmall system on a Utility. Hmmm something to think about.

Hydro lines run from the steering column to the cylinders mounted on the tie rod seems to work ok with load.I think there was some type of "helper" hydro unit. Do not know if common , factory option?
