SMTA Starting Difficulties

Our SMTA starts great in warm weather, but is difficult to start when it is cold. The spark is good, timing is correct, choke operation is ok, fuel is fresh, carburetor was rebuilt and the float set this spring when the engine was rebuilt. When attempting to start in cold weather it fires immediately, then it dies. A half shot of ether and it starts and stays running. The observation that I am making is that I cannot flood the engine. With my hand over the intake of the carburetor and cranking it will not flood - my hand is dry. I suspect it is not getting enough fuel to start, but don't understand why. After starting, the acceleration and performance is fine - no hesitation and no stalling. Looking for your thoughts and ideas.

Check your compression, valves may be to tight. Also check your manifold gaskets, could be sucking air.

I agree with Rich,,, it does sound like the valves could be too tight,, and has a vaccum leak,, you could check this when the engine is running,, Spray some starting fluid around the carb gaskets, or the intake gaskets,, if the engine changes tone,, it is leaking CHadS

Appreciate the thoughts and ideas. Valves were reset hot after retorguing the head and are still ok. Unable to detect any leaks around the carburetor or intake manifold. The carburetor will almost suck the palm of your hand inside of it! This is the baffling part - can't understand why fuel is not be drawn when choking, but the engine runs perfect after starting. Our old H will flood immediately if you choke it to much, and any amount of choking on the M and it will not flood.

SMTA; Go over your carbuerator float level measurements and readjust as needed.
Sounds like all other aspects of the tractor
are right on the money. Good luck.
