Bob, Could you tell me of any good way to check the four position switch on my Super A. I have a cheap sears meter at home but keep in mind that anything past checking continuity, could pose a problem for me. Im electrically challenged :>. And by the way the tractor is partially disassembled right now.

Thanks
scotty

Thought all SAs were equiped with a regulator therefore only three position sw was used unless you have a early like 47 model.

Scotty - If your Sears meter has an "Ohms x 1" scale, checking the switch is pretty straight forward. First mark, then disconnect ALL wiring from the switch. Then to check the...

Generator field control circuit: Hook one meter probe to the metal switch housing and the other to the generator field terminal (that's the terminal on the of the resistor hanging off the bottom of the light switch). With the headlight switch knob rotated fully counter clockwise (L position on the knob), the meter should read several ohms. In the other 3 knob positions the meter should show a dead short (0 ohms).

Headlight circuit: Connect one meter probe to the fuse holder on the switch or to the #1 terminal. Attach the other probe to the headlight terminal - it's marked #3 on the switch. With the knob in the first two postions (L and H) the meter should show infinite resistance. The next position (D) should show a couple ohms, and the last (H) should show 0 ohms.

Rear light circuit: Leave the one probe on the fuse holder or #1, and move the other probe to the rear light terminal - labeled #2 on the switch. With the knob on L and H, the meter should show infinite resistance. With the knob set to D and B it should show 0 ohms.

Hope this helps…

Thanks Bob, Yes, I believe my meter has an ohms scale. The wiring on the tractor was totally shot so Im planning on getting a new wiring harness. I will make a printout of your directions.
