Not to sound mean but after owning both I wouldn't cross the street for a 282. The 310 will pull it backwards and you make up the difference in resale.

I just bought a 706 D with 282. I had to adjust the valves, static timing and put a few new glow plugs in. Also i had to use a 10 guage wire from the battery to the stwitch to the glow plugs, because they wouldnt all work on a smaller wire. But now it starts quite easily. I could have waited for a 706 with a 310 to come up for sale, but i got looking at the cost of parts between the two motors. Everything from the muffler to sleeve kits are about twice as expensive for the 310. Also the 282 is alot more economical to run, although not quite as powerful as a 310. But there are enough gears to make up a few horses difference. I live in ne pa and have had temps down around 9 and i havnt had any trouble getting it going in the mornings.

Have had both and in the long run the german diesel motors are superior to the 282 style engine. No huge flaw in the 282 type of engine. The german diesel's are just newer tchnology.

Both engines are good the 310 is heaver. They too will start hard if the valves are not in excelent shape. The 282 does have glow plugs and they must all work. Many people make the remark that at 100 degrees you need the glow plugs, that is because that is the design of the engine. It is not a direct injection engine and most per compustion engines need some heat to start. In 15 years of working on the IH tractors I only new of on 560D that would start at temps of over 80 degrees. So the 706 good tractor my brother had a D282 706 with 4/16 plow did a good job with it.

Most people consider the 310 German motor the better of the two, however both are good engines but the 282 has glow plugs and if everything isn't working right can be hard to start. I have a 282 in a 560 and even on a 100 degree day you have to use the glow plugs, just the way they are. I think the 310 also has a few more hp. Brian

I like the 310 the best I have a 460 with a 236 same as 282 only shorter stroke. Like Brian said 100 degree day you will use the glow plugs and if you drink water over 15 min. you will use them again. If you are going 310 Rt. step up to a 756 for just a few more $ the shifter is better. I have a 706 and a 756.
