Got an H tractor, new to me and the fan belt was broken. From what I can see its a big job to put a new belt on, taking the water pump off, then trying to slide the belt between the fly wheel and the catch for the hand crank ??

How do you do it am I missing something ?

Merry x-mass to all my vintage tractor friends

You will have to remove the generator belt first before working the new main pulley/water pump belt around the fan blades.

You could be right, but I was thinking the gen. belt was closest to the engine. Rich has good idea on replaceing both no more than they cost, so wouldn't make to much difference.

While you are at it you just as well replace the gen.belt also and save yourself some grief later on. The gen.pulley comes apart as the fan pulley does. My thoughts.

Santa, you've gotten excellent advice from little john and Bill Smith. I would add that PATIENCE is the most important part of this procedure, because that old belt may have been on there for 30 years or more, and those parts likely haven't been moved in quite a while. If you can allow yourself the time, turn that setscrew hole up on top, and pour some solvent in there, then let it set for a day or so. Work the front sheave of that pulley back and forth, and soon you'll have it turning. The threads are likely full of dust and corrosion, so take your time. I got one loose on my M last winter that hadn't been moved in at least 25 years. I used most of a can of spray Gumout, and most of a can of PB Blaster before I was finished.

Little John is correct. I believe first and foremost you will want to remove the hood so you can see better at what you are doing. The front half of the pulley is actually a threaded ring that will turn one way to loosen and the other way to tighten. There is a set screw that screws into a groove to keep the ring from turning on its own. You will need to loosen the nut on that set screw and loosen the screw (I would take it clear out to insure that it is out far enough). This will enable you to turn the ring. Be careful because the ring is caste iron and can be broken fairly easily. You may want to clean exposed threads and spray on some WD-40 before trying to turn the ring. If the old belt is broke clear into, shouldn't be hard to get it off. You may want to compare it to the new one for size. Thread the new belt over the fan blades. Tight fit but should go inbetween the hand cankshaft and the crankshaft. Place on the adjustable pulley first. Loosen the ring untill the belt can slide onto the crankshaft pulley. Then tighten the ring untill the belt has proper tension, rotate ring to closest groove and then put the set screw back on.

If you loosen a set screw, the pulley that drives the belt will unscrew (front half unscrews and the sides widen out). You can get the belt off and work it over the fan blades. I hope I've remembered all the important things.
