656 hydro transmission problem

I have a 1967 656 deisel with a front end loader. Last week it was in forward, and suddenly it seemed to jump out of gear. The lever was still in the original position. After that, it continually got worse. You could slide the lever forward and the tractor would move for a few seconds and then seem to jump out of gear again. You could slide the lever backward a small bit and the tractor would move forward again for a few seconds and then seem to jump out of gear. Nothing in my troubleshooting manual seems to fit this problem. We've owned this tractor for 30 years, and this is the first hydro problem we've had. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Don't know if this tractor is a Farmall or International both can have the same problem. The international is the worst because it has the fiberglass dash. Sounds like the S R lever is moving to the left a small amount. This will cause the hydro to let go when you move the lever the hydro will kick back in. When the tractor quits try holding the lever to the right and see if it moves.

one other thing to check- happened with my F656- the fiberglass shroud that holds the fwd/rev lever cracked and let the lever move further away from the centerline of the tractor than it is supposed to track. the lever travel distances in and out are crucial to having the hydro work right. the shroud is no longer available, so i made a metal insert and popriveted it to the fiberglass.

I agree with ny bill o. The directional spool connected to control lever MUST move in or out 5\8" from neutral\center for fwd or rev. You may have to "build up" worn area of quadrant slot. I also mount quadrant\guide with redi bolt to help with adjustment.

Since this happened all at once could you have happened to kick something up against the foot and inch petal to hold it away from the deck. That petal has to be completly back to bild drive pressure. The shuttle valve may also be sticking in the bore.It has to move freely. When it does move does it jump like it wants to raise the front end off the ground? That would indicate going in and out of neutral which should only happen at the crossover between zero forward and zero reverse. To test that try moving the selector handle sideways towards the neutral position while you are traveling forward.

It sounds like what you described about the shuttle valve. This only seems to happen when the lever is in the forward position. When you slide the lever forward the tractor moves forward for a couple of seconds then stops, if I pull the lever back towards neutral just a small amount it will move forward and then do it all over again. The reverse seems to work okay. Can I get to the valve easily or is it a problem? Im gonna get a book this week if possible. Thanks for the help!

Did they replace the unit or repair it? I've been told that it's cheaper to put in a new unit than it is to repair it. I'm from around Houston if you know a good mechanic or can tell me the name of a good shop manual. Thanks for the reply.

Start by verifying that it's full of oil. Change ALL the hydraulic filters, and while doing that, look to see if there's any significant amount of metal fillings in the filters or housings. If there is a significant amount of filings, better tear into it, and find the source, as the damage will only get worse the more it is run.

If the filters are reasonably free of metal, and replacing them does not help, it's time for a factory manual, some hydraulic test gauges, and probably a Flowrater. There is a detailed diagnostic procedure for narrowing down the specific problem based on pressure and flow tests.

P. S....

Failure of the driving disc or splined hub on the engine flywheel is a possibility, also. Did you lose your hydraulics and PTO also? (If your tractor is equiped with a PTO)

Thanks for the reply. No, I didnt lose PTO or hydraulics. I have a front end loader and it works fine. The PTO also works, but I have not used it under a load. I recently (2-3 months ago) changed the oil and filters. It has worked fine up until now. My manual (IT shop manual) does not have a troubleshooting solution that matches my problem. I'm from around Houston, TX and need a good mechanic or the name of a good shop manual.

I own a Diesel 656 Hydro and have experienced the exact same problems once that I had the fiberglass housing off. This can be very scary. I had to readjust the housing and everything was fine.

Get an original IH manual, (or copy).

Your CNH dealer should be able to get you one, or check with w w w . binderbooks . com, or look on ebay.
