can a farmall A push snow

Does a farmall A have enough power to push a fair amount of snow. Am looking to buy one for that reason,please advise.

David: The little offset Farmalls tend to make larger tractors not look very good when it comes to plowing snow. When I was a teenager in the late 50s we plowed snow on the farm with Farmall 300. We often went to near by village about 100 homes at that time. 3 guys, one with a Super A, one with a Super C and a guy with an MF 35 basically kept all the drivways, parking lots, etc . cleared of snow. The guy with the Super A was just a bit smarter than the other two. He also probably moved close to half the snow. I've left the feed store on more than one ocasion with my dad and he would say ,"I think we plow snow with the wrong tractor, our blade should be on the 130." Since that time I have plowed snow with a wide variety of beasts, 560, 656, skid steers, articulated forsestry skidders, pickups. Today I plow my snow with the Farmall 130, and 6' angle blade.

Oh by the way, back in my home town, now probably double the size. It takes a payloader, 2 or 3 skid steer loaders, couple of 4x4 tractors with loaders, and about a dozen pickups to do twice the work the SA, SC and MF35 did 47 years ago. These guys today don't get it done as fast as the the guys of yesterday. I think the difference is the guys of yesterday didn't have coffee shops to sit and discuss what they don't have done.

David: As the others have commented, the A will do a respectable job of plowing snow. The limiting factor is not so much power as weight and traction. Chains are nearly indispensable, and wheel weights or a drawbar weight box are helpful as well. My grandfather did all his plowing with their '42 Farmall A until they got their dozer, and here in Northern NY the snow is measured in feet (and occasionally yards). Provided you use good technique and don't expect to clear the entire driveway at once, the A is an excellent little plowing tractor.

I sure hope an A can push snow because I know a Cub does a pretty fair job (with chains and weight on the back). I spent many memorable hours standing on the drawbar of Dad's '55 Lo-Boy providing a little extra weight. We had about 300 ft. of driveway and in the 50's and 60's we still got alot of snow in a Wisconsin winter, not like recent years. I'll never forget that bouncy ride with the heavy chains or the absolute bliss when I got to do the plowing.

I have a super A that I have used for plowing for several years. It does the job with no problems I do have wheel weights & weight on the drawbar plus chains . I plow a 160' driveway plus a a large parking area. Have plowed with up to 3'+ on the ground. We seemed to get a lot of lake effect here in central NY. But yes the Super A is a good plowing tractor.

The farmall A will plow snow up hill or down hill.
My drive way gets blasted good during a snow storm with difts and the county pluging the end.
I use my A with no chains most of the time and the only weight is me(330lbs) I made my own blade for it if you would like a picture let me know.

I would say yes the A will work good for snow, as long as it is under 18" deep, and you can angle the blade. I now use a Polaris ATV for snow and it works good but I would like for it to weigh more. With me sitting on the ATV and the blade it weighs about 1000lbs. The best tractor setup is with a loader so you can pile the snow up. I watched my neighbor use a skidsteer loader last year and having 10000 lbs and hydrostatic 4wheeldrive is great. I might buy a snow thrower, but at $1000 for a new one is kinda of steep.

I too have a Polaris Ranger with a plow. It does great with enough weight in back but I made a mount for the Super A and swapped the Polaris blade over to it. It works like a mini - dozer ! I am amazed every time I use it. I'll have to think twice about switching it back !

My family had used Farmall A's for many years to plow snow, and we get quite abit (lake effect). I just got my 49 Super A going this past fall and have used it this winter. I can push quite abit of snow with it. I would recomend you put rear wheel weights and chains on the rear tires. But they make real good plow tractors. Hope this helps.

I've just started using my '53 Super A (almost the same as the A except it has a hydraulic lift, but same engine and tranny) to plow snow and so far so good. It's exceeded my expectations and I don't think I've even really started tapping its potential yet. Hope this helps, SAm in NS

You will need wheel weights, and solution in the tires for traction. I used a 140 for several years to plow snow on a 400 ft driveway. Worked great. I used the front mounted IH 5 ft blade made for it. If you have anything very steep, you may need chains, although I never used them. I was able to go through as much as 2 feet of snow. Works best as fast as you can go in 3rd gear.

I think Haas is right about the weight. Get as much weight on the rear tires as possible and chains too if you can. The wheel with the least traction generally spins on these old tractors. No diff lock. You can use the brakes a little
in a pinch. Not sure how steep a grade you can plow but you can almost always plow downhill.
