I recently aquired a belt pulley made out of what appears to be a tightly bound paper. It almost would appear it is made of wood but it's not. My question would be to have it painted as it originally was when it was new, what color should the paper parts be red like the hub of the pulley, or black or natural. Any ideas would be appreciated as I have seen combinations of a little of everything.

I have a 1941 H that has the belt pulley like you discribe. The pulley has never been painted to my knowledge. It's not always been kept bolted to the tractor, but spent much of it's life laying on a shelf in the shop. Although it is now faded by time, the hub was & is red & the outside is natural except for traces of belt(black) dressing on it from occasional use.

Dad bought new 1947 H and I am 99&44/100s percent sure that paper part was not painted. The reason I remember pulley is that my younger brother ran tractor into tree and broke original pulley off second day tractor was on place. The old/new pulley sat around the place for years.

I am not sure the surface of the belt pulley was painted black, there was a black coating on it that I suspect was a tar base, the belt pulley remained black from the belts and belt dressing, I'm convinced it wasn't black paint...Mike in Exeter Ontario

They usually were left unpainted if added on new or else they got painted red at the factory I believe. Some folks have preferred to paint them black or red to help preserve the surface from the effects of sun or rain. It is really a personal preference as its your tractor. Here's the one on my '44 H that I used black BBQ hi-temp paint on.
