I have 2 pickup trucks,1 is a 2wheel drive 1984 Chevy that is in great shape. the other is a 4 wheel drive 1984 Chevy.I've used the 4x4 to pull my tractor to shows but now the motor and body are in bad shape, but a good drive train. My question is has anybody tried to convert a 2wheel drive to a 4wheel drive with any luck. I sure would like to keep the 4x4 for hauling the H around this summer.

I have done 2 of these and found the easiest way to to switch bodys. Everything is a direct bolt up other then you will need to do some modification to the transmision hump on the 2 wheel drive cab. It is not a hard job I did my first change over in about 20 hours. If you need anymore information I would be more then willing to try to help

Doesn't work. My son tried it a few years ago, on an 82. The front spings don't line up with the front shackles at all. Being the young kid, he tried bolting the springs to the outside of the shackles. Didn't work, nothing but problems. I have to agree with the rest, move the body, engine, and start from there.

Dave, Your 84 2wd cab and bed will bolt up on to the 84 4x4 frame. It is a bolt off, bolt on process. GET Busy!
Hope this helps,
John A.

I don't think the 2WD and 4WD frames are the same on Chevys. Remember J R Cash and the Cadillac (When we went to put it together all the holes were gone). Easier to swap out the engine and cab. If you have to much body cancer on the bed now would be a good time to build up a trick lookin flatbed.

The easyest way to do that would be to put the good cab on the old 4X4 frame. To make the 2 wheel drive to 4X4 truck you will need to remove the cab any way

I agree, swap bodies and engines, easier than swapping axles, tranny, transfer case.

I know that on Fords the holes are all the same on 2wd vs. 4wd frames. Easiest way to find out if you can do the swap on your Chevys is to measure the distance of the holes for your front leaf springs (from some easy to reach fixed point) and then go to your 2wd and see if the same holes are there in the frame. Do the same thing for the transfer case crossmember. Write back with any questions, this is my cup of tea.
