My H has a hair line crack in the manifold. The warmer the engine gets the rougher she runs. Will JB weld fix this problem or would it be better just to buy a new one?

Here is a website link to some welding rod that I have used successfully several times...www.muggyweld.com They sell a product made especially for welding Cast Iron. I have used this on about 6 different cast pieces with a 100% success rate. The key to welding on cast is to only weld about 1" at a time, and then taking an air hammer and hammering the weld that you just made to remove the stress from it. Also might suggest drilling a small hole at the ends of the crack to prevent any further spreading. The muggy welding rod is supposed to be extra resillient to stress from heat, and it works really well...I even used it to weld a 2 foot long crack on a boat block that was vertical!

Anyway, good luck with your project,

Jared Jeffries

When welding cast iron, make sure it's heated as much as possible without splattering it. This helps when laying a bead with the ni-rod. I've actually used a flux-core welding wire (for mild steel) on a Ford Bronco exhaust manifold and it's still good. Personally, I would make sure the carburetor and fuel line is removed if doing this on the tractor. But maybe you're a little more adventurous! :)

BB, I have gone two ways. I had an H manifold welded at a welding shop where the guy knew what he was doing. The rods were expensive but it turned out fine. On another H I decided to go with a new manifold and it has made an enormous difference..you have better flow and distribution with new vs pitted, pocked old and rusted, I would replace the welded one but it is a distilate manifold and they are to my knowledge not available and I do want to run the tractor on distilate for the fun of it. There are some good sealers for manifolds, Carquest has a muffler cement that we use at the shop that will harden like weld if you let it sit for a day or so but it is not permanent like weld , it may last a few years though. If I ever buy another H, I will not hesitate to spend the money on a new manifold, that makes the tractor as far as I am concerned. Good luck with the options...Mike in Exeter Ontario

We had a crack on our SM manifold brazed. After we put it back on it sounded terrible. I was looking at it and it had cracked on the intake after we put it back on. The manifold had warped from the brazing. We had this crack brazed and took it to the machine shop and had them plane it smooth. Hope this helps.

Have it brazed or welded. That way it's fixed and your done worrying about it. Plus you don't have to tie up money on another one. Not everything in the world has to be throw away. Just my $.02.

My neighbor has welded some cast for me using nickel rod. You might check to see what a local welding shop would say.

I saw some manifolds for H's on Ebay for some thing like $110
I got one from Valu-B For I think $149 with the gaskets.
Yikes!!!!! I just looked to see when I did mine and it was last Feb. Holy Cow does a year go by fast. What the heck good is it to get older and have some experience if the time just goes by faster?
Any way. I have my Manifold job documented on my web site if you need it.

BB if you are near a NAPA auto parts store, ask them if they have a product called HOT WELD. its made esp for manifolds on the exhaust side. i used on an exhaust manifold about 2 years ago and its still as good as when i put it on. if it works on the exhaust side, i'm sure it will work on the intake side. good luck

I think JB weld will fix it, but only temporarily. You need to start looking for a new manifold or a good used one.
