I have a gas farmall 400. My question is, how does the torque amplifier work on these. Mine will work ocasionally, but will pop out, and then the tractor feels like it is in neutral. When I grab the lever it has a feeling like there is gears that are grinding. If I push in the clutch and push hard on the T/A handle and let out the clutch it will take off again for a little bit. How do I fix this problem?? And how does a T/A actually work??

Jake,I just replaced the ta on my smta and had grinding as well however the ta worked.During inspectionI found broken teeth on the planet gears. When replacing your ta consider buying a heavy duty sprag unit I did it costs a little more but worth every penny.Paul.

Jake just in case you need to replace yours.
I posted to my web site how I replaced the TA on my 400 with a rebuilt unit.
I am by no means a expert actually it was my 1st time doing it. But at least you get a idea how all the parts relate to each other.
I also have a link to Steel Wheel Ranch on my links page. They have rebuilt TA's for $399 + $100 core.
Look for the Farmall 400 page link on the left pane of my site.
Hope this helps.

The TA is made up of a planetary gear set which is engaged or disengaged by the 7in. clutch. In DD (lever forward)the clutch is engaged causing power to flow straight through to the transmission, in TA the clutch is disengaged allowing power flow through the sprag (one way clutch)and through the planetary to the transmission. The sprag has to overrun in DD.What typically happens is that the sprag rollers wear flat and can't grip the ramp causing loss of power and can cause a noise. Your probably looking at repairing or replacing the TA unit. I have seen heavy oil and cold weather to cause these rollers to hang. When buying an IH I always consider the TA to be bad!!!
