The only problem ive had with my M the shifter not droping one gear before it picks up another or not brining one clear back to neutral before it picks up another. It usually happens in the first and reverse slot, but that doesnt even happen often. Out side of that the tranny seems to be sound. The only other thing that kinda bothers me is when i pull an old John Deere subsoiler (25-30" deep)the transmission starts to really howl almost scream. I'm mostly a "Green kinda" guy but this tractor was my grandpas and i have to admit its a pretty good tractor.

Grandpa used to Buck hay with it in road gear and do other loader work and some feild work with it. It wont pass my JD 60 or the G with the subsoiler but is sure keeps up nicely. and anything thatll keep up with those them is ok in my book

Good clean oil and common sense when shifting lets them last a looooong time. Our '49 M had some work done to the rear end after about 12 years of HEAVY work. Dealership mechanic put 560 bearings everywhere they would fit, and told us to quit pulling the plow in 4th gear! That was in 1961, and it's had no problems since. It worked pretty hard up until about '85.

I have found nothing worn out on my M. It had a Farmhand haystack loader for most of its life but it was never used for heavy field work. Just mowing, raking, and stacking hay and later on square bales. However, I am tearing into a JD D with a shelled out transmission. Have fun.

In all honesty, nothing, except the three sliders on the H Im working on now,and it was like that when I got it.On my M though,I basically rebuilt the rearend when I got my three point on it just to be on the sfe side.I only found one bearing that was wore enough to tell, matter of fact,I still have a few of them on the shelf just in case, some of them as I recall cost a fortune, even at a bearing warehouse.

I have found that ball and roller bearings from the dealer are significantly cheaper than equivalents from bearing houses.

All I know is that one of the bearings at Case/Ih dealer was like 150 bucks, same bearing, just a different manufacturer was about 80 and a better bearing to boot.(more balls or less balls or whatever it was)I did however find out that one particular bearing,I dont recall which, was alot cheaper, but the saving on the others outweighed the 120 mile round trip to my closest dealer and the bearing house had all of them in stock.I guess its in the region of the country. We have a manufacturer of bearing close by and thats where 90% of the bearings were made.;)

My H had one side of the differential housing broken, the collar(may not be right word) that sticks out the right side that the bearing rides on snapped off flush with the side of the housing. (Replaced it) Also (likely related) all the bolts that hold the two halves of the diff. together were loose.(Tightened them.)Two bearings in the rear end had lost their keepers, but no balls yet. (Replaced them) The teeth on the inside of the 4th/5th slider (that mesh with the main drive shaft) were gone, as was the pilot bearing.(Replaced them) Also the teeth on all the gears in the transmission show extreme wear from abusive shifting. (Lost heart, ran out of money, it works fine, they'll run another 15 years.)
