why would you install a resistor before coil to go back to 6v? why not change coil to 12v?

I have one of each. A JD 430 converted to 12 volt first and used a 12 volt coil with internal resister. Second was a SMTA and I used Bob M's diagram and used the resister. Both work good, resister was w whole lot less expensive. I converted the SMTA to a starter button with a solenoid. For starting it by passes the resister for hotter spark. Resisters go out occasionally, have been told the internal ones in coils do too. Guess it is your choice.

For those who want to save a few bucks. Easier to just go to 12, less to go wrong. 12 is just a 6 with a built in resistor - or so I was told a little while ago on this forum. Big discussion on this a few weeks back...maybe try forum archive search...

either way itsn't all that diffucult, change the coil or cut a wire and crimp on a couple connectors. the resistor route is cheaper, I think I paid about $4 for one for an 85 dodge pickup, and its got a hole in it for mounting, I cut a small peice of strap metal drilled 2 holes in it and mounted it right with the coil, on the bolt for the coil strap. Also has the benefit of not having to replace both if one goes bad.
