I can't seem to get any answers from the guys over on the Oliver forum. You guys are the best ever since I started coming here - just like family! Anyway - it's either this or the Allis 190 I asked about in the earlier post. This Ollie is BIG - I think it's either 1650 or 1655 industrial platform w/ the hoe. All real solid, good shape. Guy says he was running it on a real cold day when oil pressure just stopped. This is a diesel. He shut it down and left it right where it was and wants $4500 for it. Can't remember if it's the torque-drive or standard gear drive, but good tires, everything works, just the oil problem. Could be just the gauge or line to the gauge, condensation being frozen and plugging something up, or something worse. An engine rebuild doesn't bother me much, been there done that but was mostly wondering if any of you guys have any experience with these machines and any opinions at all. Never run an Oliver before. I've looked at the Oliver forum archives for info and them guys say they're rugged to beat all heck. Course they're probly just a wee bit biased. Thanks a bunch fellas!

I bought a cub from a fella last year, and he had this big ol' Oliver backhoe. Turned out to be an 880 diesel with some kind of big hoe arrangement. It had the dual wheels, but did not run. If only I had a bigger garage.....

The guy that dug sewer and water lines for me several years ago had a Parsons Back Hoe that was built on an Oliver frame. He always said that the Parsons hoe made him more money for him than any Ford, Case, International, or John Deere that he ever owned and he had all of them at one time or another.

Riverrat, if it is a 1650 or 1655 you will find that it will be bullet-proof. Oliver had some really great tractors w/ the 4-diget series. 1650 and 1655 had a great engine and the gear drive transmissions were industructible, I don't really know about the reverse-0-torque. I think you willl be really happy w/ this one, that is if you decide to get it.

if you don't really have to have it you could offer 4,000 and leave it at that. You might get it.

We've had an Oliver 1600 industrial (gas) for 25+ years. It came to us with a backhoe but we sold the 'hoe as we needed only the loader part. Anyway it's about a bullet-proof tractor as you're gonna find. My experience with 4-digit series Olivers (we've got 3 altogether) is they're highly reliable tractors - right up there with the letter series Farmalls.

Only trouble we've had with the 1600 is the shuttle transmission (Oliver called it the "reverse-o-tork") Had it rebuilt shortly after we got it - worked good for a while but it's now is slow to engage after it warms up. However if the tractor you are looking at is gear drive there's no shuttle transmission to give you problems.

To your oil problem I'd suspect a bad gage or possibly ice in the bottom of the pan as you suggest…

Can't say much about that machine but I do know Olivers are good old tractors. As far as whats wrong it could be a pump drive, clogged filter, pick up tube may have fell off or even spun a bearing some where and dropping oil preasure that way. But for that price even if you have to put $2000 in it to fix it I'd say it would be worth it. By the way I'm not bais I own a lot of colors
