My brother bought a 3688 hi-crop out of Louisiana, the farmer he bought it from told him he had took it to his local dealer for transmisson work and the mechanics told him inside the housing were the autographs of the IHC plant assembly people that stated it was the last tractor made before the plant changed over to Case IHC. He has not took the top off to see if it is true. If it is I think it should be a piece of history someone would like to have. I know he is going to sell it to some salvage yard soon to be parted out. I would rather someone try to keep this tractor intact. E-mail if interested.

According to Ken Updike and others, the last tractor built was a 5488, at the Farmall Plant, Rock Island, IL, I believe, and is owned by the Case Corp, in storage in Racine WI. Built on May 14, 1985. Perhaps, and only perhaps, it was actually the last 3688 made, we don't hear much about the last particular model made, only the last tractor of any model -- ie 5488. Also, it COULD have been the last IH tractor made before IH actually closed the deal with Tenneco, as the 5488 was assembled after the aquisition.

I believe CNKS could be right. The 5488 was built over several weeks time. That 3688 could have been the last one off the line during regular production.Someone ought to save it.
