Does this sound like a plugged line

I am in the process of trying to get a MD to run on diesel. Last night while it was running on gas I unscrewed the main tank cap to see how much fuel was in the tank, there was pressure in the tank and forced the cap out of my hand. Prior to this I changed the filters and drained all the fuel from the tank through the water trap area. Upon reassembling the only way fuel flowed at a constant flow to the water trap was when I cracked the bleeders on top of the fuel filter canisters, the FIN filter bled out first then the AUX. I guess my question is how does the fuel flow through the system, starting at the line that has the shutoff valve by the tank? What I am starting to suspect is that the fuel is backfilling the system through the return line, allowing it to run for a very short period on start up, although the wierd thing is that I can bleed fuel out by the injectors and it will shoot a stream of fuel about a foot. I don't want to spend the money on a fuel pump if it is something simple.

Fuel comes out of the tank shutoff, down through the water trap, up through the aux. filter, through the strainer, into the input of the primary pump. Then through the primary pump, through the final filter, and into the injection plunger unit. Bypass fuel from the injection plunger goes back into the scavenging pump, then out of the scavenging pump back into the tank. Makeup air comes from the small air filter into the input of the scavenging pump to satisfy its input demands when there is insufficient fuel from the bypass output of the injection plunger. It sounds to me like your line from the tank to the water trap is clogged or the shutoff valve is closed, letting the makeup air from the small air filter pressurize the tank through the scavenging pump. Let us know what you find. Brian

Well finally found the problem. After removing almost every line, fuel was still flowing good. So I started it up again, same problem, then I remembered reading somewhere about a small air filter. The only one I found was connected between the injection pump and the air pipe leading to the manifold. I undid one end of the line, started the tractor up on gas, switched to diesel and she is running good. I was so happy, I danced a little jig! Glad I didn't remove the pump like the dealership was telling me to.

Maybe it is sucking air in somewhere and blowing it back into the tank thru the return line ?

How is the tank vented? Thru the cap? Why would it hold pressure in the tank?
