My M will not start on its own. Replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, condenser, coil, timed, rebuilt carb and still won't start. Tractor pull starts very easy and runs great. What could it be.

Any help would be appreatiated.

Thanks,
Jon

If you have converted to a 12V system, you may have damaged the starter. The 6V starter is fine on a 12V system, as long as the starter is not used for moments of over 5-6 seconds.

I replaced cables last night and wire brushed all connections. Used heavy gauge cables. Still didn't start. Tractor is 12 volt. Converted year and a half ago. Ran fine in past.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes Bob, I'm sure it is a six volt coil. Tried one from a different tractor that works.

Thanks.

Sounds like a starter going bad

Hey Jon - When you replaced the coil you didn't by chance happen to get a "12 volt" coil (one with an internal ballast resistor)?

A 12 volt coil on a 6 volt system will develop enough spark to run the motor when it's pull started, but will not provide adequate spark to fire it while cranking with the starter.

It is very important to have good battery cables, especially if it is 6 volts. The cables on my C looked ok at first glance but upon closer inspection they were corroded pretty bad. You want good quality heavy duty cables in the range of 0 to 2 guage. Also you need to make sure that the ground cable is grounded good. I took a little disk grinder and polished a spot on the transmission flange. The 6 volt battery spins it over like a top now.

I have had this problem as well. Check the conections for the ignition wiring and make sure they are clean. Also make sure you are running a good size wire up to the ignition. The starter takes most of the batteries current, and if you have a wiring problem the current drops to low to give a good spark. Then when you pull it or coast it, it gets plenty of current and starts right up.

What do you have, a 12 or 6 volt system? I have got a 6 volt so it needs a little help sometimes. I want it orig but im going to put a 12 on it so i can get it started by the batt in stead of a deere. maybe the six is the probablem.

Farmallkid, read what the other guys have said, you do not have to change your M to 12 volt. The mistake most people make is in buying cables, they buy the wrong ones, they have a bit of corrosion ,the battery won't start the tractor. Most cables in auto stores are for 12 volt, you need to know the guage , as suggested "0" or "1" guage. Remember these tractors started faithfully for years before 12 volt systems came along, your M with the right cables and all connectionns cleaned up will start like a charm on 6 volts...good luck with it. I have come across a Farmall B for sale for $1500, it is one of the older models with no starter and no hole in the torque tube to put one on, other than that it is a nice little tractor , I just don't have the money right now , but if its still there in a month or two I think it will be mine...take care kid...Mike in Exeter Ontario
