I've got (2) IH 400's and a "M" and they all are worked hard on a weekly basis. We burn 20 - 40 gallon of fuel in the 400's weekly (each). I'm not sure what has happened, but over the course of the past year or so I'm having more and more trubble with spark plugs burning out. I've used a few different plugs, different heat ranges, found the best longest lasting plug was a Champion D18Y. But also had decient success with a Autolight plug (I can't remember the number of that one) The motors are all "tight", compression is good, valves are adjusted. I'm thinking that the fuel (gas) is just not what it use to be, and those old motors can't run right on this fuel with Ethanal and everything else in there. Does anyone make an adapter to run automotive spark plugs in those engines? I wonder if a "Platinum" tipped automotive plug wouldn't last longer and fire better. I'd run "hi-test" fuel (higher octane) but I just can't afford it. Any and all sugestions would be very helpful !!!!! I've also played with the timing, and can't see how that made a difference at all. ? What about a high output coil, and breakerless ingition ? Mabie that would help ?

Ron: I have a 300, C, and Massey and have switched to Champion's "U" series plug with an auxiliary gap built-in to increase the voltage. These plugs are kinda hard to find, but I find they work good in older tractors. Ken

Ken, where do you get those plugs from? I get most of my stuff from NAPA. I'd like to try them. Can you give me the plug number? Thanks, Ron

Ethanol in gasoline is to be at 10% or less. Mistakes happen and you could be getting a higher dosage. That will cause problems. Ethanol like all alcohols has a saturation point and will only carry so much water. It is common sense, there are only so many available OH molecules in the 10% ethanol. If the water level goes beyond the carrying capacity, you will have plug problems and more.

Define "burn out".

Do you actually mean the tip of the plug is melting, or are they "fouling"?

First, make sure your fuel mixture is rich enough; warm the engine, run @ WOT and adjust the mixture screw in & out to find the "sweet spot" and then give about 1-2 additional turns for power (cooler running also).
It makes no difference whether you are using ethanol or not. In fact it burns COOLER than straight gas. You have to be sure the mixture is correct for any fuel mixture. Besides you do not have ay water issues with ethanol since it is absorbed in the ethanol and burned. I have used 10% ethanol mixes for 20+ years in ALL my equipment here in Minnesota; snomobiles, garden equipment, tractors, car, truck, etc. and never have had any problems associated with it.
If my memory serves, my father's 400 manual said to open the mixture screw 4 turns for hard pulling tasks!
Why do racers use alcohol fuels in their engines?? To keep them cooler!!
