I have just aquired a 48 Farmall M and would like to know what weight oil to put in the oil bath and also what weight gear oil to put in the rear end. Oh forgot, what oil to use in the hydralic pump? Sorry so many ? Thanks!

I would use 90W-140 in the rear end with those straight cut gears.

You can put the same weight oil in the oil bath as goes in the engine, except that if you use a multigrade oil (10W-30, 15W-40, etc) in the engine, at least in the summer you should probably use 30 wt in the oil bath, IMO the multigrades are too light, and won't get hot and change viscosity as much as in the engine (bet I get contradicted on this). In the transmission 90W or 85W90, etc is fine. Use 30 wt in the belly pump, unless you are sharing trailing implements with another tractor, in which case you should use compatible hydraulic fluid.

I agree.

Modern oils are much better than what the engine was designed for. The big bearings and low pressures and temperatures let you use about what you want.

Much has been made of having trouble if you use detergent in an engine which has used non-detergent oil it's entire life. I always switch a new tractor to detergent oil and have never had a problem. In fact I have a 1939 that has so much sludge in it you have to poke a wire in the drain hole to get the oil to drain. After several changes it is about cleaned out (it gets changed once per year). The average old Farmall you buy has probably not been changed or even checked in years.

Our tractors get worked in hot weather and cold, we run 20W50 year round with good results. Several of our engines burn oil under load and the 20W50 helps.

We use drainings from all oil containers in squirt guns and oil bath cups. This includes motor oil, automatic transmission fluid, gear grease, and hydraulic fluid.

We get good results with hydraulic fluid in belly pumps due to switching implements between tractors, but in our mowing M we had to go to 30W in order to pick up a nine foot swather with a worn belly pump.

Don't be concerned if you drain clear water out of the rear end.

Is Hytran ok to run in the belly pump? This will match other tractors that I have.

It is certainly OK but may be a little thin if the pump is worn.

I have had good results by using "Low Ash" 30wt, right from CIH. Which is what has always been reccomended. I also use heavy oil in the rear- 85-140, and I use Hy-tran in the hydraulics because I use the implements on several tractors. Just My Opinions.... Regards, FD
