Diesel fuel getting in while on running on gas

Well, I did it! I bought my first crawler. It is an older TD-9 (early to mid 40's). I Love it! It is equipped with a Bucyrus-Erie Blade and Bosch injection (1 filter instead of 2 on the IH pump). It has always acted funny until fully warmed up. Like a sticking starting valve or injector. Anyway, It started acting like it is getting diesel injected into it while still running on gas. I posted this question here rather than on the crawler forum because I really doubt this problem is exclusive to crawlers.

I owned a Super WDR-9, and know how to operate these big diesels, but I never had a problem like this before.

The incredible amounts of unburnt diesel smoke this is producing while on the gas side is starting to bother the neighbors....the next town over!

I should also mention that while on the diesel side, since this problem started, I'm unable to get her to idle down. Wants to run at a fairly high rpm.

Help, my friends. Help! That big pile of dirt of mine isn't going to push itself!

Thanks for all the great information! I guess the general consensus is that the problem is in the pump. I will investigate and report findings, success and/or failures!

Although I have several 9 series diesels, I have never had to get inside the pumps. If they are like other inline pumps, there is a rack that turns the four individual plungers. The rotation of the plungers controls fuel output from no fuel to full output.

The rack is controlled by the govenor. Chances are one of the plungers is stuck in the full fuel position. This will cause all the plungers to be in the same position. Govenors usually come to rest in the full fuel position.

If you can get access to the end of the rack, you can probably work the plungers loose. I think it is observable by removing the fuel lines and top pump cover on a Bosch.

It sounds like the throttle rod in the pump is stuck or not in the right groove of the plunger. Take the oil filler cap off and see if the control rod is moving when you move the throttle. If it's stuck you can spray blaster on it and work it back and forth. Or it could be the diesel return line to the tank is blocked, there is a check valve on the newer pumps under the big nut on top the plunger that might be screwed down to far. Hope this helps, you have to love a gasstart-diesel.

Ran it again today. Smokes unburnt diesel smoke on the gas side. When I switch to diesel, it smokes until the engine's fully warmed up. While on Diesel, I have no control over engine speed. Throttle position is completely irrelevent INCL. moving it to the off diesel/on gas position.

I think it's pump related, since I can not see any change in any linkages.

Stumped and frustrated. Appreciate any and all help.

Somehow the injector pump is not shutting off. How do you stop it?? You should be able to shut down on diesel by putting the speed control lever to the shut off position. When you do that, and it does not shut off, there is something wrong in the linkage, or inside the injector pump.

Sounds like you need to adjust the lever setting
