Got a 560 gas (previously diesel) loader tractor with a gas combine engine in it right now. I don't need alot of power,45 hp or so but I want a diesel engine to put back. I have looked around for a 282 to put back and have not had much luck finding a good un. What else will fit in there? What about the wd9 engine? I am pretty sure the 221 or whatever it is in a 460 will work. I can't afford to run it like it is at 5 gal per hour doing loader work.
I just want to know what to look for when I go to the bone yard. Thanks

Chris Brown; 5 gal./hr for loader work seems pretty excessive to me. Are you running it hard,is your engine tuned peoperly?

Yes it is tuned good and running perfect. I think it could idle 4 gallons in a hour. It will burn 5 gal per hr pulling a 15 " disk or 4-5 just driving around.I was told it was a 263 engine but who knows,it sure has alot of power,it'll run full throttle all day in 4th gear with that 15"disk,it has alot more guts than the old 282 D had. I'd like to swap it to someone for a diesel engine,it'd be a good candidate for a pulling tractor engine.

The 221 is the gas engine for the 460. The 460 Diesel had a D-236. The D-236, D-282, and D-301(early 715 combine) all use the same block and will interchange with each other fairly easily. I highly doubt that a WD-9 engine will fit without tons of modification. If it was me, I would hold out for a good 282 straight out of a 560. Shouldn't be that hard to find.

I guess I am going to go a little farther away from home. All the junk yards around here are exhausted of 282's.they have tons of gas burners. I'll keep looking

Chris:

I know that the Farmall gassers are thirsty critters but turn up alot of power. Example. Neighbor had a 450 gas and a chisel plow. Loaned the rig to another neighbor. When neighbor returned the rig to the owner he claimed he could get 11 ft/gal. Good luck finding a deisel.
