I was wondering if anyone knows if the paint in my War Era BN is lead based. I wear a respirator while wire brushing and stripping, but the paint is flyin around the barn, and I think maybe I should figure a way to recapture it, so the kids and wildlife don't come in contact with it. Am I over reacting?

Take Care
Steve

Thanks Everyone....what I meant by wildlife is really farm stock....chickens, Dog, Cows. I have a small barn, that is used for the chickens and cows, other side is for tinkering. Any dust mde in one area is gonna go all over. I always wear a respirator, but I think I will enclose the area with plastic for the paint removal. I also have a 2,4 and a 6 year old, who are curious, so my real need is to protect them.

Take Care
Steve

Ive spent the last 10 days painting up my old McD O4 Orchard. Lots of tin. No wonder my wife told me tonight to get the "lead" out & throw some of them old dirty rags & trash away.

Absolutely!

All of the old paint will have lead in it. Contrary to other opinions posted, I know Deere & Co. phased out lead based paints year ago. I would be very suprised if any manufactures use lead based paint within the last 5 years if not more. The environmental regulations and any corporate legal cousul worth their salt would not allow any use of these paints. To use any lead, or any heavy metal for that matter, in paints is to invite big problems and thus great expense. This would not add to shareholder equity.

Enough of that. A wise man would wear a respirator while sanding grinding and sandblasting and clean up after himself. If vacuuming use a HEPA filter on the ol' shop vac. Lead dust is no fun and will make you the intellectual equal of your tractor tires.

Enjoy, lead is not nuclear waste, just use common sense and a little respect or what a part per million of bad stuff can do.

Happy and Safe Grinding!

You can forget about "liability" and "shareholder equity". Pre-schoolers don't suck on the exterior surfaces of cars and tractors. And if they did, it is reasonable to expect that their parents would stop such behavior. On the other hand, kids do chew window sills, toys, crayons, and the like that are available in the home. This is why we have lead laws. Massachusetts and Maryland have the strictest

I have a deleaders license issued by the state of Massachusetts so I am awaare of the problems. When I buy auto paint I always ask about lead content. The last red paint I bought was three years ago. It contained lead.

We all have lead in our bodies. It eventually gets bound up in the calcium of our bones. Most people have around 10 micrograms per litre of blood. I usually test out at 20. People who reach 80 will display symptoms. Anybody who has 60 will need to be cafefull of furthur exposure. A symptomatic person usually has to undergo chelation therapy. Levels can be cut in half after a few treatments.

I don't know about John Deere. There is no reason why they shouldn't use lead paint. I suspect they do as green is usually leaded. It should be noted that modern leaded auto paints are nowhere near as dangerous, as it relates to lead, as the older formulations.

PPG and probably Dupont still have lead in some of their paints. I think Case-IH 2150 has been lead free for a couple of years.

The last time I checked, which was about three years ago, lead is still used in red and green paints. It was almost certainly used in the forties.

The auto paint mfgs have been reducing lead where they can. Durable red and green pigments have not been discovered yet.

It is interesting to note that IH and Mack only offered red and green trucks up into the fifties. These two colors were the most durable because of the high lead content.

Children under the age of six are most susceptable to long term brain damage from lead.

I would think that there is alot more lead paint nestled in your foundation plantings than in your barn. After you spray your tractor, you should make an attempt to pick up whatever red paint dust and overspray you can.

Most paint in that era was produced with lead. Lead was very important to the durability of paint. If you have ever wondered why the old tractors paint seems to hold up better then todays paint its because of the lead content. If you are concerned about the contamination of the barn with the paint chips, you could drive/roll the tractor onto a piece of poly before you start wire brushing. When done roll off the tractor and most of the paint chips will be on the poly which you can fold up and throw away when your done.

ya, you are over reacting. Most of us are going to die of something anyway. Think about it this way; there are hundreds of men, women, and childern killed and injured EVERY DAY in an automobile but nobody stops driving do they?
