And I am amazed that my H had been gainfully employed for well over 60 years.
It might make another 60 with good care.
WOW!!!
Cant say enough about over engineering.

Amen to that! These old Farmall/IH tractors seem to last forever. I know of many still in use today. When restoring my '44 M I only had to replace 2-3 bearings in trans, everything else was OK, and it had really been used and abused as the only tractor for years on several hundred acres. Also tractor was operated by hired help, not the owner, hence the rough condition. With new bearings & bushings in bolster, it drives as good as new. They were built to last.

Kelly, It makes a feller wonder how easy/hard it will be to find a plastic hood, fender or grill panel, and a multitude of aluminum engine parts in 50 years for the tractors built today. It is heart warming, however to see the number of young guys out there who have taken an interest in the tractors their fathers, grandfathers and even great grandfathers grew up with. If that trend continues,in 50 years, they will still be looking for hoods, fenders, and grills, and "steel" engine parts for A's, H's, M's etc.

Over-engineering is the only way to go. If my F12 and F14 had a road gear faster than 3 mph I would still be using those too! Oh well, the 42 H does just fine (62 this year!).

I know of a couple of H's and M's that are only on their 1st overhaul since new and are in daily use! Never had the transmission or rearend opened up either. I know the one of them was overhauled sometime in the 60's, after 15 years of hard field use.

They just don't make 'em like they used to...

I agree, and what is also amazing is the fact that these old tractors will go out and work shoulder to shoulder with the new multi-thousand dollar tractors, most of which will be in the iron pile in just a few short years, relatively speaking.

Kelly, Those old tractors were made to be infinitly repaired. In the restorations I have done on an A, B, Super C, Super H, and MD I have been amazed at how almost all the wearing parts can be readily replaced (even though some are not available from Case IH, but used to be). As you said, many of the parts are so over engineered that they can operate for 50 years plus without wearing out. Roger
