F-30 piston shims

I am putting new conecting rod bushing, and new piston pins in my 37 F-30. It seems to have 2 like 1/64th thick shims per side, and between 2 to 3 paper thin shims per side. What Im wondering, is should I remove any of those shims to allow for wear over 67 yrs or not. Also, the tops of the pistons around the beveled part at the side of the top is encrusthed with burnt whatever. whould I take that off before reenstalling or leave it on/ Thanks. Bill

Im afraid I dont understand your statement (you get the tightest fit at the quarter turn) or somthing like that. Well what I dont understand, you get 4 (I assume) different settings if your turn it the full 4 quarters, so i dont know at what position on the crank your speaking of

I believe what what he means is that the crank pins are worn egg shaped from many years of use.Not severely mind you but common in engines that have seem many hours of use. When the crank is 1/4 turn past top center and like wise 1/4 turn from top center you will probably find the bearings fit the tightest. Unless the crank is severly worn this shouldn't be a problem in a low RPM engine.Just add or subtract shims till the bearings don't bind,or rattle,use some plasti-gauge if you want. Should be just fine.

ya, take out enough shims so they are just snug and not binding. you will find that the tigtest spot is on the quarter turn of the crank.
