I purchased a 1944 Farmall H narrow front and noticed that the distance between the two front tires is greater than my other Farmall H (narrow). Whats the reason? I was told this tractor might have had a corn picker on it. It also has coming out of the front hubs mounting features. Did farmall have 2 different size narrow fronts or different rims and were they more rare. Even the thread size is different on the spendal. The wider one has a course thread and the other has fine thread.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

The mounting features go through the Hub cap. They seat against the bearings where as my other H has the nut design. I did compare last night and found the rims are bolted on the out side to allow increased distance between tires. I still have to look at casting numbers.

If the tractor had a IH#24 corn picker on it thefront wheels had to be as narrow as possible. Is the mountings you refered to attached to the bearing cap. It,s 1.25in round and 3/16thick.A bracket attached to these to steer the front snout,as it was not wide enough to turn very short. Are the holes in the front wheel castings larger than the later models

Mark, There were indeed 2 types of narrow front systems. The early H's and M's had a non- adjustable and later on, (not sure of the year) adjustable narrow fronts were available. YOu can tell the difference in that the non- adjustable hub casting has a shoulder on the inside and the rims seat against it and are held with lug clamps and lug bolts. The adjustable front has rims with offset dogs which allow for 4 separate positions on each wheel, whereas the non adjustable rims are plain with no dogs. The adjustable rims bolt directly to the hub casting and dont require lug clamps.

It sounds like you have later hubs on your front end. The later ones the rims were bolted on, hence as Farmall Kid mentioned, it was somewhat adjustable, depending on where you bolted the rims, and whether the rims and tires were bolted in or out. The early versions with the clamps only had one way of assembly. Just for kicks, check the casting dates on the lower bolster, and the hubs, and see how they compare with the rest of your tractor....

I think it depends on what side of the hub the rims on. On my brothers h the rims were inside the hub, so the tires were close together. Then we put them on the outside and they were farther out. But maybe im wrong, there could have been a picker on it.

Does it steer easier in either one of the postions? Why would someone choose wide over narrow? I must keep my H, M and C narrow to fit down vegetable rows, just wondering....

It steers the same. i dont know if it would give you more stability on slopes or not. I think if you moved them out a bit they would still fit in your rows, we just put them on the outside cause we took them off to get new tires on it, then just put them on the outside.
