I'm planning on putting a tach on my H. I have a distributor drive and tach cable from a 300. My question is would a tach from a 340 farmall be close enough? Would i be better off finding one from a 300/350? Thanks for any inputs.

while we are discuusing it, what tach would work on a 400? and can't find an origanal one so what one(s) would work for a substitute?

Sounds like you have the hook up for a tach cable. look at ebay #3807886841, if it looks like this, it has the hook up for a tach.

Yes, mine has a plate but it is flat and solid--nothing sticking through like ebays rusty piece. What do I need to add to hook up a tack?

Since they are both 4 cylinders, I think it would read your RPM OK, but since the 340 ran the C135 which was probably rated at a higher work RPM, the speeds and the 540 RPM PTO indicator mark would be off. Don't have access to my books at the moment, but check the rated RPM on both models to determine how far off the speeds would be (guess work, but if the H is 1600 RPM and the 340 2000 RPM, tach would read maybe 20-25% slower than you were actually going).

Thanks stan, i didn't think of the working engine rpm being different. I'll look into it. would the hour meter be affected?

Good question,
Not knowing the internals of the tach my guess would be if the hour meter is designed to read hrs at operating RPM, then yes, it would also read lower than actual on your tractor. Of course it's reading total hrs from another motor now anyways ;)
