I was trying to time the mag on my M and when I turned the magneto to get the impulse to snap at #1 TDC it never did. it would snap when i cranked the tractor but it wouldn't do it in the distance allowed by the mag mounting bolts. I noticed the circular drive coupling could be turned a quarter to 3/8" or so. I checked that against my H which hardly turned at all. The M does not run all that smoothly, not like the H does at least. Is this the problem and how hard would it be to fix? thanks!

It sounds like the drive gear that is turned by the cam gear is off a tooth or so. You can change the timing in about 15° increments by pulling the housing loose and turning it one gear tooth. You can check this by noting when the mag impulse snaps. Look at the notch on the crank pulley in relation to the pointer on the gear cover. The mag drive turns in the same direction as the crankshaft.
