Will tightening this fanbelt be obvious?

I have an IH 364 diesel with a worn/loose fanbelt. I haven't taken off the top sheetmetal to look at it real close but there is no idler to easily tighten the belt. What am I missing. Seems there has to be one if the belt is to ever do it's job properly. The belt simply runs from the crank to the water pump. Don't laugh too hard since I'm new but will this be obvious once I remove the sheetmetal?

A word of caution here- make SURE the setscrew is sufficiently backed out(might be best just to temporarily remove it) before you turn the front part of the pulley to tighten the belt. DON'T get too carried away "tapping" on it with a hammer and punch to get it to turn. The casting WILL break nicely in half if you do this too hard....Don't ask me how I know...;) Good news is that it's fixable if you can weld... Also, on mine, it turned out that the belt was just plain worn out too much- I could turn the front part of the pulley in clear past the threads and it wouldn't get the belt tight. Best bet is to go ahead and put a new belt on while you're there.

I thank all of you for your response. I can tell mine is of this design just by me glancing at it. Still, I'm confused how threading the outside of the pulling in or out relative to the inside of the pulley tightens the belt. But I guess I will be able to figure this out when I look at it. Seems this would just cause the belt to be misaligned...

Greg- are you familiar with the belt drive systems on snowmobiles or the variable-speed belt drive on Polaris ATV's? They operate similarly. Hold your hands out in front of you in a "V" position with your fingers pointing up. Imagine that's the pulley, and the belt, which is a fixed width, is between them and towards the bottom of the "V". Move your hands closer together and you'll notice that if there was a belt there it'd have to move upwards(tighten) as the "V" gets narrower. The alignment of the pulleys doesn't change enough to hurt anything since the rear of the pulley doesn't move. And it's not like these things are turning 6000 RPM anyway, so some misalignment can be tolerated.

Thanks Ron. I am very familiar with the design you speak of. Now it makes perfect sense. Heck I worked on gas powered golf carts as well as ATV's that use this type of sheave design. Just didn't realize this was what my IH 364 has.

yup, I looked in the parts cd and it has a theaded pulley flange just like the old farmall h & m

i don't know if it's like a 706 gas or not but there are two bolts with nuts that i loosen and move the fan up to tighten the belt or down to loosen the belt. if yours is not set up like that then look at all the accesories the belt runs and there must be somthing on a pivot where you loosen one bolt that is the pivot and one bolt that the object swings on. hope this helps

Greg-- the belt is adjusted by the water pump pully. There is one or two set screws that you can locate on the pully. Loosen the set screws and turn the outside flange of the pully. You have to do this to remove, replace or adjust the belt. In other words, the front half of the water pump pully is threaded to the rear half. Look at the front of the pully and you can see the threads.

The way to tighten them is to tighten the fan pully, sorry I can't tell you how I just know thats how its done. If you had asked this a week or 2 from now I might know how since I will be replaceing one on a 450 in a week or two.

Not familiar with anything that new, but the older Farmalls tightened the fan belt by loosening a set screw on the side of the water pump pulley and screwing the two halves closer together. Sometimes took a little persuading.
