I dismantled my carb. this weekend and found that my idle end was badly corroded and scored. Now I know why nothing would happpen when I tried to adjust the screw. Would this be a problem with the performance of the tractor. Where would one get a new screw?

A screw like that can cause all sorts of funny problems, it slows down the gas flow and can even make it sort of catch at times

I don't know if it could cause your problem or not but have you tried a dealer to see if they get you a new screw. According to my parts manual there were two varieties of Carter carburetors used on these tractors. So far as I can tell the part you are after is #68 469 R1. The same part # was listed for the "Valve, Needle Idle Adjusting" for both carburetors. Hope this helps. SAm in NS
