At approximately 8:10 this morning a wind shear or a twister crossed the bottom of our county and my farm was right in its path. There is total devestation, both machinery sheds are flat and laying across the machinery and tractors stored inside. My 584 has the hood and grill smashed in and the muffler smashed off, the M has the muffler and manifold smashed, an H has muffler and air breather smashed off, it seems anything sticking up on the tractors got it, I crawled under the debris but couldn't get a real good look, the building was pretty unstable. I believe there is damage to the M grill as well, the corn planter has broken seed boxes, a hopper wagon loaded with corn is on a 45 degree angle with the box twisted and dented in. I had two cars in one shed and I can't get to them to see what damage occured. My barn roof including sheeting and rafters is gone, there is sheets of tin for about a quarter mile in the direction of the storm, across my fields and the neighbours. My cattle were all safe down below and my tenants went to the basement until it was over, The house took it the best with only the loss of maybe 40 or 50 slates off of the roof and some ridge cap. Two farm in the area lost silos..I had never seen a silo snapped in half and I saw two today. I now have to get the debris off the site so I can get to the tractors and machinery and see how bad it is. I will be prying steel sheets off the trusses and then I guess I'll cut the trusses up with the chain saw and eventually free the trapped machinery..its going to take weeks to get everything cleaned up. I have several big trees snapped off and lying beside the house. I have insurance but I realize after the horrendous damage that I didn't have enough on the buildings. The machinery and tractors are well insured. I am going to have my Case-I-H dealer come out and winch my 584 onto the flat bed and take it to the shop for complete repair, then when I get the other tractors out I will do the same. I hope to be able to put the cattle out onto pasture soon and the secure the barn from them so we can start on it..it wasn't a good day but, noone was injured, the cattle are fine and everything is repairable, it isn't like a fire where nothing is left. There is some tough clean up too, a part of the barn roof rolled across the field and rolled itself up into a big ball of twisted steel and wood, not sure how to deal with that. Anyway I thought I would tell everyone and if you don't see me on here for a while you know what I'm doing..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

You will be in my prayers, Mike. I can only imagine the devastation. We lost our barn, 140 dairy cattle and two silos in 1989. God bless that your cattle and family are both okay. Take care, and keep your head up.

Mike,

Glad to hear no one was hurt. Our neighbor's barn caught fire (built in 1904) went up like a match stick. Flames over the silo's. Got all the cattle out including the calves that were close. Never spread to machinery. Thought the silo's were going to take off like a rocket but never did. 7 fire trucks later, the fire is out. No one hurt. Thank God!

Sorry to hear about that Mike. We had a hurricane come on shore here last September and it cut pretty well clear across the province from Halifax up towards PEI. A few buildings were blown down around here, lots of roofs dissapeared, some of the farms up Truro way were hit pretty badly. Around here the worst of it was all the trees. Most of them still aren't cleaned up. Good luck getting your place cleaned up and repaired. SAm in NS

My heart goes out to you and I will pray for your speedy recovery. My family went through an F-3 last June and we lost 7 of 12 irrigation pivots and my brother's 85,000 bushel grain storage facility. We know how personal it feels when this happens and how helpless it can seem. There will be a better day; you will see the sun shine again.

Michael thank the Lord no one or any livestock were injured or killed. I do wish I were closer so I could help you with the clean up. No one can belive the damage a twister can do until they see it first hand. I live in Tornado Alley, but I have never seen one in person, just the devestation they leave. Just this past week was the first aniversey of two twisters that moved at the same time about 50 miles apart for 70 miles. Where I live was just about square between them one leveled the down town of Stockton and the other leveled down town Pierce City these towns ars about 50 miles apart and all most the same distance from the state line. My wife and I had been in Stockton the night before to eat supper. You have my prayers as at this time things must look very bleak.

Jimmy, you live in Missouri too? So do I, I live in Marshfield, When the tornado warnings went out I was helping a guy tinker on a tractor, we heard some noises and stepped out of the barn to see pieces of tin, siding, foam board insulation going flying through the air...That was enough for me and my buddy to leave the scean...Luckly we got home unharmed. Verona, Pierce city, stockton, and other little towns(dont remember 'em all) weren't quite so luck. I will remember that day the rest of my life...so will my girlfriend as that is her b-day. Well I just had to say hi to a fellow missourian. Hope to talk to ya soon.
John

Michael: Thank the lord people or your livestock were not hurt. At that time this morning 8:10 it got so dark here we had to turn the lights on. Here we are little more than 25 miles to the south of your farm and we got just a mere breeze. It looked like there would be a cloud burst, but we reveived very little rain as well. By noon time I was disking my garden unaware of such happenings to the north of us. When I came in this evening Marg. was telling me about there being quite a vicious storm to the north of us. She mentioned Zurich so probably it was you making the news.

If there is anything I can do I will take a drive up. Will you be at the farm in the morning? I don't know how much good I will be to you as I have a bad sinus cold. I was out tinkering around here all day, didn't acomplish a whole lot. There is probably very little I can do other than pass this bug along to you, really not something you need right about now. Keep me posted.

What you need is a log truck with a cherry picker. Those things will really pick a building apart with great finesse. Do you know anyone with one of those. The sawmill over on the road to Kirkton from Exeter have one. Probably several others up your way.

Mike, sorry to hear about your loss. Luckily no one was injured. It is a mess to cleanup. About 15 years ago a twister took out my dad's neighbor's barn. On my dad's farm it went between the house and the barn taking out a couple of trees only, then across a field into the maple sugar bush leaving a path of twisted and broken trees.

Real sorry to read your post. Glad no one was hurt. Tin and wood are all replaceable. Here in the lower Ottawa river valley twisters are really rare, especially in April. We still havve snow in the shaded fence rows. However last August one went 16 miles northwest of me in the Laurentian mountains, wiping out my friends shop and shed. He called me to warn me. I went outside to see(9:45pm). Sky was pitch black and no sound of anything. Real scarey. Then after 10 oclock news Environment Canada said possible high winds and issued a warning. I see Vincents took on McCormick. Maybe give the 584 a dose of swap. Be careful and keep us informed.

Mike, its been warm here in central Michigan, 85F, and gusting winds at times, but nothing compared to what you are experiencing. So sorry that you have such a loss, but glad nobody was hurt. Buildings can be replaced, but not loved ones. I only wish I were closer so that I could give you a hand with the clean up. I'm sure your neighbors will do all they can to help so that you can begin farming, as it is that time again. All the best to you, Mike, and Im sure everyone else is hoping that you can recover and regroup soon. Your presence here will be missed, but your absense quite understadable. Hurry back.
