I'm just starting to investigate what is causing my low oil pressure. When started it's half way approx. 50 on the gauge. After warm up it drops to about 10. I read earlier on the message board to start out with the Gauge and then look at the oil pump and last the barring gaps. Now M.E.K don't go off on me just yet I haven't got out the parts shot gun (YET). My question is this. What goes wrong with the oil pump, and how hard are they to install? My motor doesn't smoke and doesn't knock when oil pressure drops. So my first task is to try the guage. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Mark

First of all you need to find out if your oil pressure gauge is reading correctly. This is done by disconnecting present gauge and installing another (known good) oil pressure gauge/hose assembly. Then work tractor as normal and get cold and hot readings and compare with readings you mentioned. Th oil pump on a "H" a piece of cake to change out. Albiet messy and you tend to get dripped on alot. A few things to look for are as follows: gear backlash and cover clearance to gears. There is a VERY thin gasket on that cover. You should also clean pick-up screen and check for obstructions in pick-up tube. You will also need to check relief valve spring and ball. I do not recommend but have heard of guys stretching this spring slightly for a bit more pressure. Again I have not tried that and do not recommend. From there you need to check rods, mains and cam bearing clearances. HTH, Mike Let us know how you come out.

I have got an H at home and mine at start up runs at 60 to 65 pounds of oil pressure. when it warms up it stays the same. and it has got a little bit of blow by in the number one cylinder. my neighbor has got an H also and his runs 70 to 75 pounds during start up till you shut the thing off after it has been worked. your oil pressure gauge could be the problem or your oil pump could be bad. try tapping on the top of the gauge. then see if the needle moves back where it should be. if it does move back there's your problem. have you checked the oil in it lately? that would make the oil pressure drop from 50 down to 10.

I am not sure what the oil pressure is supposed to be on an h. You should check the manual. This topic has been gone over before - search the archives for postings. Good luck, Irv

The oil pump should be located on the bottom of the block under the oil pan. They are relitivly easy to change. I have never done an H but when I over hauled the 450 I remember that is where the oil pump was. I think it had 3 or 4 bolts holding it up.
