SMTA Wide Frontend

I'm considering the purchase of a SMTA with a wide front. The owner claims to have purchased the tractor from the original owner who told him that the tractor came from the factory with this frontend. My problem is that I have never seen a SMTA with this front. It has two steering arms that attach to what I would call a pitman arm . The attachment point is in front of the tires. It lookes like the one on the MD on page 95 of Fay's " FARMALL Letter Series Tractors " book but with two steering arms. It looks much lighter than the one on the SMTA in the same book. Could this be original to the tractor? Does it matter value-wise? Thanks

Bud, Super MTA tractors above 60001 had the IH wide front with the tie rods behind Part# 360 400 R91. Prior to 60001 IH used wide fronts with the tie rods in the front 57067DG for the Gas models and 62026DF for the Diesel models. Now what the difference between the two actually are, I would have to guess the spindle size might be a bit larger due to the weight difference between the gas and diesel.

You can't get more specific than that-WOW. Should the pre 60001 have two steering rods-one to each side?
Thanks

Hi Bud,

The stock wide fronts had that double drag link (two to rust) and the "steering arm" or "knuckle".

Even tho this is on a little H, this picture is of one set up to clear a beet topper bed and is wayyyyy out in front of the tractor. Most sat back under the tractor more.

Are you sure it would be " right" for a SMTA? Its funny that everyone I see has the much heavier looking unit with the links behind the axle and that "V" looking plate in the middle.
Thanks
Bud

Hi Bud,

If I'm not mistaken, this is right about the time that IH was changing over to the newer style wide fronts as the next generation all had the 'behind the axle' tie rods.

No, I'm not sure of anything anymore.

Have you got a picture of that thing?

I have a picture but I'm not sure how to attach it to this site. If you want to send me your email address ( wiesedeppe@aol.com )I may be able to attach it to a email to you. The unit is IH but I have never seen one with two steering arms.

The Swartz had a welded mounting bracket, while the factory rear tie rod style had a cast mounting bracket, which conformed to the profile of the bolster casting.
