I have an International 656 with the D282 diesel engine in it. The engine has been completely overhauled. I do not think that I am getting oil to the upper part of the engine. Oil will come out the hole for the pressure sender and there is oil into the filter but no oil coming out around the rocker arms. I have removed the glow plugs to be able to turn the engine over fast and to see if the oil comes out in the upper end. There is none and I have removed the rocker arms and shaft and filled each hole in the head with oil and there is no movement of the oil when turning the engine over with the starter. I have no clue as to what the oil circuit is supposed to be in the engine my IT manual does not cover it. Can someone give me a clue as to what path the oil takes through the engine. Also any help would be appreciated in correcting this problem. I have not checked the pressure with a gauge yet.

I have seen this problem several times. The valve train don't get any oil because the head gasket was installed up side down blocking off the oil passage to the head.

How can I determine if the head gasket is not correctly installed without removing the head. Can I look through the oil passage holes in the head with a flash light and determine this. Thanks

J.D.: Have you tried running the engine with valve cover off? I question if you get enough circulation just with starter even though compression is off. Start the tractor and let it run about 800 to 1000 rpm with valve cover removed. I'm thinking you will see oil on the rocker arm shaft.

That is my plan next. I have two push rods ordered. I do not know what happened to make them bend. They were on the number four cylinder. It has taken me while getting the engine together. There has been one little problem after the other. I will check the valve timing to make sure every thing is okay. I have run the engine about 5 minutes so far. I will have to make me a small tank and hook every thing up. The existing tank takes a lot of room on the top of the engine and and you cannot see much with it in place. Thanks for your help.

J.D.: That fuel tank is a bit of a pain, just too close. But then what it held wasn't bad also. You can get the valve cover off without removing tank, at least I was able to change a push rod in no. 2 cylinder without removing tank. I only ever bent one of those in 15,000 hours.
