Thanks to all who helped with my earlier carbeuretor related post. Alas, my first IH is turning out to be a bit of a pain -- carb now fixed, she still won't run worth a darn. The machine in question is my newly acquired Cub SN 5233. I replaced spark plugs, plug wires, points and condensor, inspected and cleaned rotor and cap and still only a weak spark at a test spark plug. Put a test wire directly into the high voltage discharge of the coil and the spark will only jump about 1/16 in. and is yellow.

I'll try and see if a coil is available locally and swap it. BUT, if that doesn't do it then I'll need to get into the guts of the magneto itself, and the books I have so far whimp out when it comes to the mag -- they just say "refer to your IH dealer." No offense to IH or to dealers, but in my area I wouldn't bet on the dealer recognizing a mag, let alone working on one. Where can I get a GOOD DETAILED manual that will cover the mag? I have a little magneto experience so a more technical manual is okay. Are there any parts sources other than IH dealers? I'm hoping that once I get all the kinks worked out of the old cub that she'll be a dependable runner, but so far it doesn't look good.

Many thanks,

Pete P.

Thanks all! Found a coil locally (dealer was quite happy to get rid of it and the 1/2 inch of dust on top of the box.) Will investigate books as recommended and if no luck call Mr. Hillsinger. Thanks again,

Pete P.

Pete,I meet a man who lives in Maryland,That is retired who has a complete Mag shop, and is very reasonable, and honest, and professional. His name is Gill Hillsinger,His phone # is 410-795-3734,Ive learned a long time ago its better going to a professional than messing with these so-called mechanics. He has rebuilt 2 F4 Mags,1-Carb.for my F12,and a Hyd.pump for my Farmall 200,And a E4a mag for my McCormick 10-20,and ive never had a problem.I would recommend mailing your mag to him

Buddy of mine had an old 10-20 that was basically junk, tore it all the way down, sent the mag and carb to him and came back looking and working like new.(At least I think it was him,the name sounds familiar and i know he was in Maryland)

Check the link below. Click on "Blue Ribbon Service Manuals" and you'll find a service manual for magnetos. I don't think the J-4 is specifically covered, but there is enough there to help you through it.
For parts, try magnetoparts.com He has the coil for the J-4 mag. That is your most likely problem unless the magnets are weak.

Also it's easy to hook up a 6 volt coil for a temporary test, or if you don't care about original as a permanent fix. Disconnect the internal wire from the points to the mag coil, and the wire from the kill switch to the side of the mag. Find a place to mount the "new" coil (must be grounded). run a wire from the + post of the coil to the terminal on the side of the mag where the kill switch was. run a lead through a fuse and switch to the - terminal of the coil (assuming still 6 volt + ground). connec thigh tension lead to new coil instead of mag coil.
