Hi, I just bought a 41 H and it basically is a basket case, but thats what I wanted, something I could build and fix myself. What better way to learn these things. It has the gas/distillate engine and my question is should I rebuild using this head or find a gas? I get so many different opinions I don't know what to do. Naturally I have the power bug, but I don't want to go too crazy with this. I plan on doing the whole motor so before I buy or have pistons made I have to decide which head to use. I've been told to use a 300 head, mill my head, or if I was lucky I could find a propane head. Really I have no clue where to start with this. Would love for someone to get me pointed the right direction.

First, you need to decide what you want. Everybody has opinions about what other people should spend their money on. What do you want the tractor for ?

Going from flat top pistons to domes and from a kerosene to gas head made a big difference in the amount of power my H makes. The compression ratio went from something like 4.7:1 to 6.5:1. It was noticable. But I use my tractor a lot. It was low compression for the first 63 years and worked just fine.

Do you have enough parts to put it together and get it running ? If so, I would suggest doing that first. Once it is running, you can see what else it needs. Then take it all apart, fix everything and put it together again. Any initial mistakes will be low cost and you will still get to spend $4000 to have $2500 tractor when you are all done.

Don't have pistons made.

Micheal is correct. Unless you need more power, leave it be. If it is cracked or unusable, and you are doing the whole engine, then you might consider a gas head. You will get all sorts of suggestions as to how to increase power. But if you are not going to use it much, it simply does not make any difference. You could restore it to it's orginal condition, with the small tank, shutters, etc.

Whiskeydented, I have an M and an H that have the distillate heads and they run fine on gasoline and have for the last 50 years. A distillate head will not cause any problems and it will only cost you to find a higher compression gasoline head. I have two H's, they are great tractors and you will enjoy yours when you get it together...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael -- Sorry I mispelled your name -- Wish this forum was like some others where you can see all the posts while responding. Hope you rebuilding is going ok. It's tornado season here in Kansas, can happen any time.

Thanks for the advise. I think I will just use the original head as long as it's not cracked and go from there. If I want more later I know I have different options.

Here is the problem I run into after buying my Farmall H. I pulled the head because it needed valve work and when I did I noticed it had IH Firecreator pistons. I remembered from when I was young helping my dad overhauling our Super H that the instructions that come with the Firecreator sleeve & piston set says that you must have a high compression head when installing the piston set. Well not thinking anyone would put in Firecreator pistons without the high compression head, I diden't check the serial nr. of the head to see if it was high compression or not. After getting the tractor running, I could not get the engine to idle without laboring and missing. I rebuilt the distributor and carburetor, rechecked timing but would not change the idle problem. After putting the H on a dyno at a antique tractor show, it showed low on hp. so that got me to thinking I had the wrong - low compression head on my engine. After taking the valve cover off and checking the serial nr. I found out it was a low compression head. I replaced the head with a head from a 300 and now it idles perfect and has great power. Another good thing about a Super H, 300 or 350 head is that they have rotors on the exhaust valves if you are going to do hard work with your H. I had steel seats cut into the head for the intake valves also for burning unleaded gas.
