Am looking at a used gas 656 hydro serial#35535.
I was told to test the pump, warm engine, rev to about 1200 rpm, apply brakes and push lever ahead. If the engine kills, the pump is in good shape. Is this a fairly accurate test when buying a used hydro?

Wes not much different than gear drive, the brakes should be able to stop the engine if the hydro is good in low range, the only other way is to flow rate the hydro with a hydraulic flow rater with the rear wheels on stand and use the brakes for load.
