When did IH start putting 3-pt hitches on them?

Howdy, all.
Hope you folks are having a good and safe weekend. Can someone tell me what the first years or models were that IH started putting 3-pt hitches on their tractors? I'd really like to find a little utility tractor w/ 3-pt to help our Super A out, just not familiar with which ones may have 3-pt. I wouldn't mind a MF, but this is an IH/Farmall area and I'm kind of getting to like Farmall red.

As Guy Fay stated below, the International 350 Utility was the first US built IH tractor available with a factory three point hitch.

The earliest IH tractor really planned to work with 3-point equipment was the 300 Utility with the IH Fast Hitch (2-point) system, introduced in 1955. The hitch's rockshaft (rotating part at top of hitch) accepts a standard 3-point toplink; all that's needed for 3-point compatibiliy is adapters for the lower hitch points which usually come with the tractor at this point in time. If not they're available from Steel Wheel Ranch, among other vendors.

This set up beats a standard 3-point (such as on the N-type Fords) IMHO because it allows you to back directly into whatever you're hooking up until the bottom links latch, then hop off and hook up the toplink. With the Ford setup, you end up backing into the equipment until you're close, then muscling either the tractor or the equipment the last few inches until it lines up - really not the safest practice, and a lot more work especially if you're working alone as I usually do.

Something you have to watch though is the spacing between the bottom pins; the Fast Hitch setup allows no flexibility in the horizontal direction and the spacing has to meet the 26" Category 1 3-point spec. or the attachment won't hook up to the tractor. So far I think I've bought two pieces of equipment which I haven't been able to hook up because of this restriction. Sad, but true.

The 350 Utility (1957-8) also was set up like described above, and probably at least some of IH's other utility tractors as well. Hope this is useful.

I agree. My 350 with adapters has worked on every 3 pt. implement I've tried. I did have to build several different adapters with different angles, offsets and upsweeps to make my various equipment work, but backing into those tongs is much better than wrestling equipment to line up pins and balls.

Dick: I would never recomend someone buy a fast hitch tractor with a conversion to 3 point if he wanted 3 point. I've used three of those kits, all different, and all a pain in the butt. There is a lot less equipment the right width than you think.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. My experience has been it's the standard 3-point design that's the pain; hooking up to a heavy piece of equipment unassisted is more work, if not danger, than I want as long as something easier and better is readily available. As far as I'm concerned the conversion as I described for the 300U is the best of both worlds.

Finding equipment the right width is generally a matter of checking with a tape measure; almost everything made by a legitimate manufacturer fits just fine, it's mostly the backyard builders you have to watch.

Dick: The only 3 point equipment that was as you describe was Cat. I. Back when these tractors were new, there was a lot of equipment even by mainline manufacturers that was not the right width for fast hitch.

I do agree with your idea in principle, as did engineers at IH. By the time IH came out with the 04 and 06 tractors with lower link sencing, they did incorperate the telescoping lower link. This was nothing more than a fast hitch latch with a fast hitch fork that could slide out about 6" and could move up and down about 2" when all the way out. That feature has been standard on all Cat. II and larger tractors, built in North America for the past 40 years. I know some manufacturers use it on Cat.I Ends can be purchased for weld on to any 3 point, about 2-3 hours work for a welder.

As for opinions, I am not about to argue with 95% of North American farmers. Fast Hitch and IH are where they are today because of all their bone headed ideas. Not a good statment to have to make about a company that also had some of the best ideas in the industry as well. The bad out weighed the good.

350 Utilities could be purchased with a three point, especially when sold to industrial customers. Earliest I know of in the US.

Darren: First IH tractors to have 3 point were the British built tractors, starting in mid 1950's. B-250, B-275, 414, 434, etc. The 04 and 06 American built tractors came in 1962-63.

The British diesels have a reputation of hard starters here in Canada and our cold winters. Some of the first ones we never got them going from Oct. until April. Some guys beat the problem by keeping their C, SC, etc as a pup start. Later ones were climatizted, for Canadian winters. Most of the first ones had upgrades upon being rebuilt. In TN that would never be a problem. They were great little diesels when starting was not a problem.

You're probably right about starting in our winters here, Hugh. I always feel bad for you guys when I hear that you're in the double digits below zero and have snow drifting. Last winter the coldest it got that I remember was about 20 degrees F here in southern TN, and that was cold for us! I think on average we get two or three hard freezes a year and a good snowfall maybe every five years. On the upside, we never have trouble starting much of anything here-- gas or diesel. On the downside, anytime the weather guy utters the 's' word (even just flurries) bread and milk fly off the store shelves and everybody goes nuts for a few hours. I for one really miss the snow, but I don't think I want as much as you get.

I think the 404 and 504 were the first North American built IH's with 3pt. Probably a B275 was the first IH SOLD in North America so equipped.

The Farmall 404 and 504 Farmalls were the first US built IHC row crop tractors with 3 point available. The International 404 and 504 were the second US built utility tractors with 3 point as 3 point was also available on the International 350 Utility, which preceeded the I404 and I504, although most I350 Utilities were sold with two point.

Harold: IH didn't advertize that 350 utility 3 point very well. In that 4 to 5 year period that 300 and 350 were new on market, my guess is IH dealer in our area lost 65% of his market for that size of tractor to Massey. They never did return either.

International 340 Utility which followed 350 Utility also had three point hitch. I 350 Utility was offered with three point during its second/final year of production. Every now and then you see one but most have two point.
