I just bought a 656 w/narrow front. I found a good price on a wide front at a tractor salvage yard. They said that it was for a 656 so I bought it.

Just wondering if the same wide front was used on M's through 686 or did they change over the years.

The one I bought is different than many I have seen. Rather than Large nuts on top of the king pins, the levers that turn the spindles are attached with smaller horizontal bolts.

I'm looking for a wide front for my 300 also so any general info on IH wide fronts would be appreciated.

Sounds like a Schwartz to me. The arms basically "clamp" on, right? Nothing wrong with a Schwartz front end, just not original.

I have a IH wide front on my 706 that has the crossbolt clamp type steering arms. I think they may be aftermarket replacements, one thing for sure they will never work loose like the factory type. You can tell a factory IH wide front by the center bolster that bolts to the tractor, if its cast its IH, if its made of welded steel its aftermarket.

David: M wide fronts were didderent in that tyrods were out front. From Super M through 656, basic design stayed the same, few changes in length of steering control arms to give shorter turning. The 666 and 686 were a bit different although will bolt up, tyrods will be different as those two tractors used an external cylinder for power steering.

My 686 uses the steering gear built into the front bolster like the 656, M ect. No external cylinder.
