I have an older 574 gas and started having problems with hydraulics. started with steering and now we cannot lift loader or anything else.
We changed oil-filter and even replaced pump but still nothing. Everything works fine when you 1st start it but it gets very hot very soon and then will not work. The whole tractor seems hot and smells of hot oil. Is the radiator the problem or the oil cooler by the radiator or just what is it? It should not get that hot that fast and has been very frustrating trying to figure out what is wrong. Can anyone help?

I forgot to say that while we were trying to figure out what was wrong, the material left on filter was magnetic, causing a lot of worry but the transmission sounded fine worked fine, this is what led us to the brakes.

Hi Jerry, does your parking brake work ? If not then the tractor has probably been driven with the parking brake on and your hydraulic/transmission oil is full of groundup barking brake. This will clog the hydraulic system. There is a splitter valve by the hydraulic filter that controls the splitting of the hydraulic oil flow between power steering and brakes and 3pt hitch. This can become clogged and prevent oil flowing to ps, pb and 3pt.
You say the transmission becomes very hot. My brother has a 684 and the transmission on it will get very hot in 90F weather if you are baling for a couple of hours.
Make sure the hydraulic oil is flowing thru the oil cooler in front of the radiator. One pipe should be hotter than the other.

Good luck
JB

We had those same symptoms last summer with a 674. We'd change filter and it would work for awhile. We finally decided to go after the brakes since that was the only thing we could think of that might be stopping up the filter. Then before we got in there someone on here said that was probably what it was. After we put new discs in brakes it worked for us.
